The University of California San Diego will honor World AIDS Day on Thursday, Dec. 1 to raise awareness of the impact that HIV/AIDS has had and continues to have on the San Diego community, the nation and world. In recognition of the international event day, which was established in 1988, the campus will sponsor a number of free activities open to the public including a display of three sections of the AIDS Memorial Quilt, a presentation on the HIV prevention pill, talks for specific communities and populations impacted by HIV, artistic performances and more.

Leaders from the University of California San Diego will be joining administrators throughout the UC system on Nov. 19 for the Achieve UC outreach initiative, designed to urge thousands of high school students and their families to aim for a UC education.

Born and raised in Shelton, a small town in Washington State, Keyzers-Flanagan joined the Marines at age 18 so she could travel the world. Soon after, she became a Marine security guard, protecting U.S. Embassies around the globe. The senior attended college on a part-time basis until she enrolled in UC San Diego two years ago. An international studies-sociology major, Keyzers-Flanagan is also earning a minor in international migration studies. She plans to work for the U.S. State Department after graduation.

Before Uma Mahto began her freshman year at UC San Diego, she was both nervous and excited. She didn’t know anyone on campus, nor did she know her way around. But she was confident that she would make the most of her college years. Fortunately, Mahto enrolled in UC San Diego’s First Year Experience program, which is designed to prepare students for a successful transition and integration into a large research university. Today, she is flourishing as a member of the Muir College Council, a Resident Advisor and member of the Jacobs School of Engineering Global TIES program.

Massive voter registration efforts are underway at UC San Diego as students from the nonpartisan Student Organized Voter Access Committee (SOVAC) race to register 4,000 students by the California deadline on Oct. 24. SOVAC has registered more than 1,400 students since the campus’s move-in weekend in mid-September and the organization has been making additional efforts through tabling, outreach events and debate parties.

Spoken word and theatrical performances, film screenings, a powwow as well as an art and essay contest are all part of UC San Diego’s 11th annual California Native American Day celebration. A statewide holiday established in 1998, California Native American Day is recognized on the fourth Friday of September. At UC San Diego, the one-day festivities have been expanded to a yearlong celebration. The theme for the campus’s 2016-2017 celebration is “Native Journeys: Forging Paths to an Empowered Future.”

The University of California San Diego has been ranked the seventh best public university across the globe by Times Higher Education World University Rankings. In its 2016–17 report, the London-based publication ranked UC San Diego 22nd in the United States and 41st internationally.

The University of California San Diego welcomed its most diverse incoming class of freshmen and transfer students on Sept. 22 with additional resources that support diversity, inclusivity and student success. The new initiatives include identity-themed housing for LGBTQ, black and Latino students and a mentoring program for students who come from under-resourced high schools and/or are the first in their family to attend college, among other programs.

Ameesh Paleja, a 2001 University of California San Diego graduate of with a bachelor’s in computer science and engineering, is revolutionizing the movie industry with Atom Tickets, where he serves as CEO and co-founder. Recently launched, Atom Tickets is a first-of-its-kind theatrical mobile ticketing platform and app, allowing moviegoers to skip lines by preordering tickets and concessions, and invite their friends without having to pay for their tickets via its social invitation features.
