The University of California San Diego has admitted a record 30,273 freshman and 9,802 transfer students for the fall 2016 term. The number of new freshmen is up 3,773 compared to last year and there is also an increase among transfer admits by 1,652 students. Of the 40,075 admitted students, the university anticipates enrolling a diverse class of 5,660 freshmen and 2,933 transfers.

A recent study by BestColleges.com analyzing which colleges enroll and graduate women with majors in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) found that the University of California San Diego tops the list with one in three women graduating with a STEM degree. UC San Diego’s proportion of STEM graduates is three times the national average.

Raul Carranza, who is graduating with a degree in political science from UC San Diego, is not your typical student. The Chula Vista native, who will soon apply to law school and plans to run for public office someday, is passionate about American politics, cares about social justice, studies hard and has a wry sense of humor—but that is not all that sets him apart. Carranza was born with muscular dystrophy and only has limited use of his right thumb.

When economist and founder of the global microfinance movement Muhammad Yunus completed his doctoral studies in the United States, he soon returned to his home in Bangladesh. He said the country was rife with problems that ranged from lack of education, to extreme poverty and even famine. For any other graduate this may not have seemed like the ideal time to be starting out in life; however, for Yunus, the timing was perfect.

Leslie Carver, professor of psychology, will be Thurgood Marshall College's next provost and Emily Roxworthy, professor of theatre, will serve as the new provost of Earl Warren College. Both appointments are effective July 1.

Commencement weekend will kick off on June 11 with the All Campus Commencement featuring keynote speaker Muhammad Yunus, a Nobel Peace Prize recipient and founder of the global microfinance movement. The event, at 10 a.m. on Saturday, will mark the first time in 16 years that UC San Diego will convene all of its graduating undergraduate and graduate students for a campuswide commencement ceremony.

A father of four who went back to school at age 29 to provide a better future for himself and his children and a psychology major whose post-graduate plans include eradicating poverty have been selected to inspire new graduates to give back, as the student speakers for this year’s All Campus Commencement ceremony.
