The University of California San Diego, one of the top 15 research universities in the world and recognized for its contributions to the public good, in partnership with The Friends of the Dalai Lama Foundation, founded by Ven. Lama Tenzin Dhonden the Personal Emissary for Peace to His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, today announced that the exiled spiritual head and leader of the Tibetan people will offer the keynote address at the invitation-only UC San Diego All Campus Commencement June17, 2017. His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama will also speak June 16 at a second event, which will be open to the public. This will be his first 2017 U. S. tour stop.

UC San Diego will recognize significant figures in African-American education with events from January through March that honor this year’s Black History Month celebration, themed Crisis in Black Education: UC San Diego Improving the Pipeline for Academic Success. The month of activities will culminate with the Black History Month Scholarship Brunch from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Feb. 25 in the campus’s Price Center West Ballroom with keynote speaker Steve Perry. Perry is an education contributor for CNN and MSNBC and a best-selling author who has dedicated his career to increasing opportunities for those from underserved communities to earn college degrees.

The transition to Division I athletics is an exciting time for current UC San Diego students and for many alumni as well—including Julian “Skip” Schink, ’76, and his father, David, ’63. In 2014, the two men established a scholarship for UC San Diego student-athletes. “The transition to Division I is an opportunity for UC San Diego to step up on the national stage, so that everyone knows how great the school is,” said Skip, who played tennis while studying chemistry at UC San Diego.

The University of California San Diego has received a record of 88,451 freshman applications for fall 2017, a five percent increase from the previous year. The university had the second highest number of applicants among the University of California campuses.

The University of California San Diego will honor World AIDS Day on Thursday, Dec. 1 to raise awareness of the impact that HIV/AIDS has had and continues to have on the San Diego community, the nation and world. In recognition of the international event day, which was established in 1988, the campus will sponsor a number of free activities open to the public including a display of three sections of the AIDS Memorial Quilt, a presentation on the HIV prevention pill, talks for specific communities and populations impacted by HIV, artistic performances and more.

Born and raised in Shelton, a small town in Washington State, Keyzers-Flanagan joined the Marines at age 18 so she could travel the world. Soon after, she became a Marine security guard, protecting U.S. Embassies around the globe. The senior attended college on a part-time basis until she enrolled in UC San Diego two years ago. An international studies-sociology major, Keyzers-Flanagan is also earning a minor in international migration studies. She plans to work for the U.S. State Department after graduation.

Before Uma Mahto began her freshman year at UC San Diego, she was both nervous and excited. She didn’t know anyone on campus, nor did she know her way around. But she was confident that she would make the most of her college years. Fortunately, Mahto enrolled in UC San Diego’s First Year Experience program, which is designed to prepare students for a successful transition and integration into a large research university. Today, she is flourishing as a member of the Muir College Council, a Resident Advisor and member of the Jacobs School of Engineering Global TIES program.
