Sustainability, environmentalism and taking action against the threat of climate change will be at the center of UC San Diego’s Earth Month celebration throughout the month of April. This year’s theme, UC San Diego: Using Science to Protect the Planet, will be weaved into events designed to educate and engage the campus and surrounding community.

“Classifications and distinctions based on race or color have no moral or legal validity in our society; they are contrary to our constitution and laws.” Such is the message on the doors to Thurgood Marshall College’s newly renovated Ocean View dining hall. Spoken by the college’s namesake, the first African-American Supreme Court Justice, the words highlight the principles of diversity and equality central to the new campus eatery.

As every UC San Diego student, staff and faculty knows, emails come in by the tens or even hundreds on any given day. Some of those emails may appear to come from familiar sources such as a bank, social media, friends or even colleagues, but they may look odd or suspicious. These emails can range from a UC San Diego message indicating mail support for Internet Explorer IE 8 will discontinue to a “delivery failure notification” email from the U.S. Postal Service. What they are in reality, however, is a phishing scam.

As part the University of California San Diego’s continued outreach efforts to high schools across San Diego and the state, staff and leadership from campus including Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Juan González will travel to Madison High Feb. 21 and Chula Vista High Feb. 23 to deliver the message that a UC education is within reach. As a first-generation college student, González knows the important role education plays in enhancing the future of young students.

A new study reported by the New York Times names the University of California San Diego as one of the best colleges in the country for providing upward social mobility to diverse students across California and the U.S. Among highly selective public universities, UC San Diego has the highest population of low-income students, and with a degree from the campus, these students have a high probability of thriving in the middle class and beyond. “The median family income of a student from UC San Diego is $82,000,” the Times stated.

The University of California San Diego, one of the top 15 research universities in the world and recognized for its contributions to the public good, in partnership with The Friends of the Dalai Lama Foundation, founded by Ven. Lama Tenzin Dhonden the Personal Emissary for Peace to His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, today announced that the exiled spiritual head and leader of the Tibetan people will offer the keynote address at the invitation-only UC San Diego All Campus Commencement June17, 2017. His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama will also speak June 16 at a second event, which will be open to the public. This will be his first 2017 U. S. tour stop.

UC San Diego will recognize significant figures in African-American education with events from January through March that honor this year’s Black History Month celebration, themed Crisis in Black Education: UC San Diego Improving the Pipeline for Academic Success. The month of activities will culminate with the Black History Month Scholarship Brunch from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Feb. 25 in the campus’s Price Center West Ballroom with keynote speaker Steve Perry. Perry is an education contributor for CNN and MSNBC and a best-selling author who has dedicated his career to increasing opportunities for those from underserved communities to earn college degrees.

The transition to Division I athletics is an exciting time for current UC San Diego students and for many alumni as well—including Julian “Skip” Schink, ’76, and his father, David, ’63. In 2014, the two men established a scholarship for UC San Diego student-athletes. “The transition to Division I is an opportunity for UC San Diego to step up on the national stage, so that everyone knows how great the school is,” said Skip, who played tennis while studying chemistry at UC San Diego.

Earning a bachelor’s degree from UC San Diego in just three years may seem like a daunting feat, but recent alumni such as Siyi Ye, Brianna Lonquich and Albert Chang did so despite having either double or capped majors and studying abroad.
