UC San Diego will celebrate Black History Month in February with events that pay tribute to legendary figures in African American history. These individuals helped make our nation a better place through activism and service, including 2018 commencement speaker John Lewis, often called "one of the most courageous persons the civil rights movement ever produced."

The subject of sexual violence and sexual assault prevention is a matter of national importance, and it has been at the core of the work of UC San Diego's sexual assault resource center, CARE at SARC, for decades. This year, the program is recognizing its 30th anniversary with events and campaigns that highlight UC San Diego's pioneering history of providing support services and prevention education for campus sexual assault, relationship violence and stalking.

Surfer Magazine has ranked the University of California, San Diego as the No. 1 college in the country revered by many surfers for high academic standards, illustrious alumni, and nearness to quality surf. With a nationally-ranked surf team, UC San Diego has consistently been named a top school for surfing, by other media in addition to Surfer, such as Transworld Surf magazine and Surfline.com.

The University of California San Diego has yet again received a record number of applications with 97,670 freshman and 18,782 transfers applying for fall 2018 admission. Applications to the campus have been steadily climbing for more than a decade, as its reputation has grown as one of the world’s top research universities.

The University of California San Diego will recognize World AIDS Day on Friday, Dec. 1 to draw attention to the impact of HIV/AIDS has on the San Diego community, the nation and the globe. In honor of the international event, which was established in 1988, the campus will sponsor a number of free activities open to the public including a display of three sections of the AIDS Memorial Quilt, the largest ongoing arts project in the world.

The University of California San Diego has been named the nation’s 10th best public university for LGBTQ students, according to BestColleges.com. The new rankings measure academic institutions that create environments and policies which meet the needs of students with a wide range of gender and sexual identities, along with additional academic and affordability metrics.

As soon as Stephany Gonzalez enrolled at UC San Diego, she decided to volunteer at the campus’s food pantry. Her service was a thank you to her parents, who had to deal with food insecurity before emigrating from Guatemala to the United States, where they raised Stephany and her sister and encouraged them to pursue their college dreams.

UC San Diego is launching its inaugural Veterans Week Nov. 6 to 9 to express gratitude towards men and women in the armed forces for their sacrifices and service to our country. The weeklong activities for the XXX campus veterans and military-affiliated students will include the annual Veterans Recognition Ceremony Nov. 8, a city-wide job and resource fair Nov. 7, a clothing drive, volunteer service and more.

The University of California San Diego has been named the globe’s 16th best university by U.S. News and World Report. The campus was also recognized as the nation’s 5th best public university in the fourth annual rankings, which measure factors such as research, global and regional reputation; international collaboration; as well as the number of highly-cited papers and doctorates awarded.

The University of California San Diego’s commitment to reducing energy use recently garnered the campus a first place award in the North American Laboratory Freezer Challenge. The nationwide best practice competition encourages laboratories to reduce the environmental and financial costs of ultra-low temperature freezers.
