November 12, 2015 — According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, one in every four young adults between the ages of 18 and 24 has a diagnosable mental illness, including depression, anxiety, eating disorders and addictive behaviors, among others.

November 12, 2015 —  UC San Diego student Kate Schneiderman faces the white board and hesitates as she works on a calculus formula. With leader Jivani Gengatharran offering an encouraging “be confident in your answer,” Kate smiles as she writes the correct solution. This isn’t a UC San Diego classroom or even a traditional tutoring session; it is a Supplemental Instruction pilot program where students teach students, launched this fall under the Teaching + Learning Commons.

October 22, 2015 — Blasting aboard space shuttle Challenger in 1983 to become the first American woman—and at age 32, the youngest American in space—the late Sally Ride captured the nation’s imagination by breaking barriers. Her legacy also includes inspiring generations of students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) through Sally Ride Science, a science education company she co-founded in 2001

September 24, 2015 — Today, the University of California, San Diego celebrates its latest breakthrough—a record-breaking year of private support for the campus. UC San Diego raised 20 percent more during fiscal year 2014-15 compared to the previous year, with over 43,000 gifts and grants totaling $177.5 million.

August 24, 2015 — For the sixth consecutive year, the University of California, San Diego has been ranked the number one university in the nation by Washington Monthly for its contributions to the public good. The magazine released its 2015 College Guide today, an annual issue that takes a different approach to ranking the nation’s colleges and universities.

June 11, 2015 — Enhancing education through technology is a passion of Jeff Elman’s. “My first job after college was as a high school teacher in an area of Boston where few kids went to college,” said the UC San Diego professor of cognitive science and former dean of the Division of Social Sciences. “My love for teaching and learning has continued ever since. But over the years, I’ve become increasingly aware that there’s often a mismatch between what we know from the science of learning and the way we actually teach. Online platforms and the use of technology are not silver bullets—after all, they can be misused—but they do open up exciting new educational possibilities.”

June 4, 2015 — UC San Diego’s Department of Music, founded by composers over 40 years ago, spans the spectrum from classical to contemporary, including jazz, Hindustani, computer and experimental music. The Conrad Prebys Concert Hall, located in the heart of campus, is recognized as one of the greatest small concert halls in the world. The music department’s distinguished faculty have earned Pulitzer, Guggenheim, MacArthur and Grawemeyer awards. And, now, the department, under the Division of Arts and Humanities, also has key tools universities use in recruiting and retaining outstanding scholars: endowed faculty chairs.

May 29, 2015 — Composer Rand Steiger, currently chair of the UC SanC Diego department of music, is known for pushing the boundaries and exploring the combination of classical instruments with digital audio processing. Throughout his diverse career he has composed for and conducted critically acclaimed concerts and recordings with distinguished ensembles both here and abroad. In support of his teaching, research and service activities, Steiger has been appointed the inaugural holder of the Conrad Prebys Presidential Chair in Music in the Division of Arts and Humanities.

May 28, 2015 — UC San Diego graduate student Mandy Nussbaum is living a dream – serving as a valued member of the stage management team for the current La Jolla Playhouse production of Come From Away, a world premiere musical.
