“My father was an OB/GYN,” said Ernest Rady, one of San Diego’s most prominent philanthropists and business leaders. “When a woman would come in and say, ‘Thank you doctor, you saved my life,’ my father said it was like making a million dollars. He instilled in me the thought that helping others is fruitful.”

When he realized he had neither the talent nor the dedication to be a career musician, San Diego builder Conrad Prebys chose a different path. But his passion for music never wavered, and since 2007, he has generously given to the Division of Arts and Humanities at the University of California, San Diego to help ensure that the facilities, faculty and programs will continue to launch students into successful music careers.

In the early 1990s, concerned staff, faculty and student activists sought to establish a Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Resource Center at the University of California, San Diego. In 1999, UC San Diego finally opened the LGBT Resource Office—the last campus to do so in the UC system. Fifteen years later, the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Resource Center at UC San Diego, one of the largest LGBT resource centers in the nation, celebrates a milestone anniversary—a visible presence that enhances a sense of connection and community among faculty, staff, students, alumni and the San Diego community.

UC San Diego’s Gabriele Wienhausen has always enjoyed the challenge of a start-up. Since becoming a faculty member in 1987, she has provided leadership and innovation for a variety of new programs and initiatives, including serving as founding provost of Sixth College. Now, Wienhausen, associate dean for education, has accepted her latest entrepreneurial appointment: inaugural faculty director responsible for the launch of UC San Diego’s Teaching & Learning Commons.

“I was thinking how appropriate this name, The Basement, is,” said UC San Diego Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla at the Feb. 6 launch of the campus’s new incubator/accelerator program for student entrepreneurs. “You think about companies that started in a garage or started in a basement—and that’s the whole idea. We want to create a space for our students where they can not only grow, but where we actively nurture them, and nurture their good ideas.”

It is rare for an “orphan” disease (typically a condition that affects fewer than 200,000 people nationwide) to have a specific center dedicated to providing treatment and research. And it is even more unusual for big pharmaceutical companies to invest in an endowment to fund this type of center. Fortunately, the US Hereditary Angioedema Association (HAEA), a nonprofit patient advocacy organization, along with four pharmaceutical companies—Shire Human Genetics Therapies Inc., ViroPharma Incorporated (which merged with Shire), Dyax Corp. and CSL Bering—pledged a total of $4.6 million to help make the US HAEA Angioedema Center at UC San Diego Health System a reality. A number of individuals, including those with the disease, also provided private support.

Following a comprehensive nationwide search, the University of California, San Diego announces the appointment of Becky Petitt as Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (VC-EDI), effective March 23, 2015. She will serve as the lead senior executive responsible for providing a holistic and integrated vision on all major equity, diversity and inclusion efforts. Petitt brings to UC San Diego 24 years of progressive leadership experience in diversity work across the university community, most recently at Texas A&M University as Associate Vice President for Diversity.

For the first time, two distinguished UC San Diego faculty have been appointed to hold University of California endowed faculty chairs supported by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, in areas of particular interest to the Foundation. UC San Diego Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla has appointed Sheldon Brown from the Division of Arts and Humanities holder of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Chair in Digital Media and Learning, and Emilie Hafner-Burton from the School of International Relations and Pacific Studies holder of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Chair in International Justice and Human Rights.

To deepen understanding and advance scholarship on Greek history, literature, archaeology and culture, UC San Diego’s Division of Arts and Humanities has launched an academic Center for Hellenic Studies—a modern forum where local and international faculty, researchers and students can collaborate and study the Hellenic world. The Hellenic Cultural Society and its members have contributed to the center, including $25,000 from the organization and a $1 million gift from an anonymous donor to encourage and inspire additional support.
