Two endowed faculty chairs funded in part by Ernest and Evelyn Rady through the Rady Family Foundation have been established at UC San Diego’s Rady School of Management. Contributors throughout the U.S. invested a total of $3 million to fund the Dr. Harry M. Markowitz Endowed Chair in Finance and Investing and Duane A. Nelles Jr. Endowed Chair in Corporate Governance that will help recruit and retain exceptional faculty.

Elizabeth Reed, assistant professor in the School of Medicine at the University of California San Diego, was honored at the April 29 YWCA Tribute to Women & Industry Awards (TWIN) as a TWIN Humanitarian. To further that interest, he has established, through a bequest, a multimillion dollar endowed fund to support the UC San Diego Yankelovich Center for Social Science Research.

Becky Petitt will soon mark her one year anniversary as Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) at the University of California, San Diego. In the past 11 months, Petitt has made progress in implementing new campus climate programs, policies and perspectives to create a more inclusive community for faculty, staff and students.

“I don’t really understand how people who have been active in the university can retire,” said William Fenical, UC San Diego distinguished professor of oceanography and director of the Center for Marine Biotechnology and Biomedicine at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. “We’ve dedicated every waking moment of our lives for 50 years to doing things that are beneficial for folks. How do you just drop that?” At 74, Fenical is still is a full-time professor and still researching drugs from the sea, including compounds that look very promising to fight melanoma, multiple myeloma as well as breast and ovarian cancer.

On Dec. 2, four UC San Diego-affiliated entrepreneurs participated in a University of California program designed to give a boost to some of the system’s most promising life-science startups. The reward: a $150,000 purse for the grand prize winner, with three runner-ups each winning $50,000.

Kane, M.D., a renowned specialist in prostate cancer and an expert in robotic and other minimally invasive procedures for urologic surgery at the University of California, San Diego, has been appointed the inaugural holder of the Joseph D. Schmidt, MD Presidential Chair in Urology in the School of Medicine.
