In the mid-1990s, a shrinking number of students from underrepresented groups and an increasingly hostile state and national climate to people of color strained race relations at the University of California, San Diego. Through protest, signature gathering and teach-ins, students from the Student Affirmative Action Coalition (SAAC) along with concerned faculty and staff called for the establishment of a center that would support the concerns of underrepresented and underserved students while at the same time build campus engagement for diversity and social justice issues.

The University of California, San Diego—recognized as one of the top 15 research universities worldwide—raised $148.3 million in private support in fiscal year 2013-2014. Nearly 30,000 donors helped to fund UC San Diego’s strategic plan commitment to being a student-centered, research-focused, service-oriented public institution that provides opportunity for all.

Committed to fostering the future of health care in San Diego, more than 1,000 donors have contributed $131 million to UC San Diego’s Jacobs Medical Center. Included in the total are gifts that matched a donation of $25 million, meeting the Challenge goal of the initiative. Today, the campus announced that the Challenge donation, originally anonymous, was made by Joan and Irwin Jacobs. They provided a $75 million lead gift for the new facility in 2010; with the Challenge gift, that brings their contributions to the Jacobs Medical Center to a total of $100 million.

The UC San Diego Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender (LGBT) Resource Center will begin a year-long celebration of 15 years on UC San Diego’s campus with a transgender symposium on Tuesday, Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. at the Student Services Center Multipurpose Room on the main campus in La Jolla.

In Southeastern San Diego, local residents are transforming a 20,000-square-foot vacant urban lot into a community focal point for healthy place making. Formerly a food desert—a city area that lacks supermarkets or farmers markets—the Ocean View Growing Grounds offers a gathering place for people to grow food, socialize with their neighbors and hold events.

To support UC San Diego’s commitment to increase the diversity of graduate students, a coalition of campus programs debuted an enhanced recruiting presence at the Society for Advancement of Hispanics/Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) national conference in Los Angeles Oct. 16-18. The largest STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) diversity event in the country, the 2014 conference brought together more than 3,800 students and science professionals of color for a weekend of cutting-edge science, mentoring, networking and professional development.

Pierre Ouillet has been appointed UC San Diego’s first Vice Chancellor and Chief Financial Officer, serving as the senior executive officer for all of the campus’s financial resources. A member of the Chancellor’s executive cabinet, Ouillet will join UC San Diego in November 2014. His selection follows an international search.

New UC San Diego students participated in inaugural first-year transition activities offered Sept. 27 through the Black Resource Center’s Success Institute. The one-day program, offered at no expense, is designed to foster a strong sense of community for students, connecting first-year and transfer students with key support services that encourage engagement, retention and graduation.

Benefunder, a San Diego-based philanthropic research funding platform for higher education institutions, and the University of California, San Diego, recognized as one of the top 15 research universities worldwide, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to embark on a two-year pilot program. The long-term goal of the partnership between UC San Diego and Benefunder is to allow junior and senior faculty in diverse disciplines to create funding relationships with private supporters from across the country, and generate one-time and recurring donations to fund their work and vision.

Leadership, faculty and staff at the University of California, San Diego are mourning the recent loss of two generous friends to the campus: philanthropists Miriam and Jerome Katzin. Married for more than 75 years, Miriam died on June 2; Jerome’s death followed less than two weeks later on June 14.
