UC San Diego LGBT Center Begins 15 Year Anniversary with Transgender Symposium

The UC San Diego Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender (LGBT) Resource Center will begin a year-long celebration of 15 years on UC San Diego’s campus with a transgender symposium on Tuesday, Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. at the Student Services Center Multipurpose Room on the main campus in La Jolla.

The symposium, entitled “We Cannot Live Without Our Lives: A conversation on Anti-blackness, Trans Resistance and Prison Abolition" focuses on the experiences of trans women and gender non-confirming people of color. Facilitated by Eric A. Stanley, a UC President's Postdoctoral fellow in Communication and Critical Gender Studies, this historic panel will bring together formerly incarcerated Black trans women and organizers to talk about the specific ways trans women of color are impacted by imprisonment and to highlight strategies of growing prison abolition.

Panelists include CeCe McDonald, Reina Gossett, Janetta Johnson and Miss Major. The panel is preceded by a reception at 6 p.m., hosted by UC San Diego’s LGBT Faculty and Staff Association. The event is co-sponsored by a number of departments and division at UC San Diego, including the African American Studies Minor; Associated Students Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion; UC San Diego’s Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion; the Campus Community Centers; Critical Gender Studies Program; and Black & Pink- San Diego.
