Heart of San Diego Gala Celebrates ‘Pulse of the Future’ Feb. 7

Rae Arnold had never experienced any problems with her heart. But in June 2011, she began having chest pains and underwent emergency triple bypass surgery at a hospital in San Diego. After 12 weeks of rehabilitation, she began experiencing symptoms again and had to go in for another surgery. This one did not go as planned.

Committed to fostering the future of health care in San Diego, more than 1,000 donors have contributed $131 million to UC San Diego’s Jacobs Medical Center. Included in the total are gifts that matched a donation of $25 million, meeting the Challenge goal of the initiative. Today, the campus announced that the Challenge donation, originally anonymous, was made by Joan and Irwin Jacobs. They provided a $75 million lead gift for the new facility in 2010; with the Challenge gift, that brings their contributions to the Jacobs Medical Center to a total of $100 million.

Changing Lives: Carol Vassiliadis Names Hospital with $8.5 Million to Jacobs Medical Center

Carol Vassiliadis did not attend college at the University of California, San Diego. Her two children did not go to UC San Diego. Her late husband, who battled cancer over a decade ago, was not treated at UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center. Yet, Vassiliadis has dedicated innumerable hours and considerable resources to the campus, including gifts totaling $8.5 million to the future UC San Diego Jacobs Medical Center. In honor of her support, the new facility—to be opened in 2016—will be home to the “A. Vassiliadis Family Hospital for Advanced Surgery.” A portion of Vassiliadis’ support was also matched by an anonymous donor as part of a Jacobs Medical Center Challenge grant, for a total of $12 million in gifts.

The ceremonial groundbreaking—with engraved baseball bats—represents the next step in the transformation of the existing baseball field into a state-of-the-art facility for UC San Diego’s intercollegiate baseball team. Triton Ballpark is made possible with the support of lead donors including Bill Scripps, Gary Jacobs, a 1979 UC San Diego graduate, John Moores, Malin Burnham and Richard Atkinson, UC San Diego’s fifth chancellor.

The University of California, San Diego’s 11th annual Dinner in the Library will take place Friday, Sept. 12 in the Geisel Library building, with proceeds benefiting the UC San Diego Library’s collections and services, which support student and faculty research and teaching. The evening’s festivities will include dinner and cocktails, a silent auction, and a keynote talk from internationally recognized biographer Noël Riley Fitch on “Sharing Julia Child’s Appetite for Life.”

UC San Diego Announces Chancellor’s Medal and Revelle Medal Honorees

UC San Diego Launches New Athletic Scholarships

When students begin classes at UC San Diego this fall, it will mark a significant milestone for UC San Diego Athletics. It will be the first time in the university’s history that the campus will offer prospective high-merit student-athletes athletic scholarships that are significant enough to help cover tuition and educational costs. The scholarships will be funded by fees from a 2007 Associated Students referendum, with additional private support from alumni, families and friends.
