$5 Million ResMed Gift Supports Sleep Medicine at UC San Diego

The University of California, San Diego today announced a $5 million gift from locally based medical device company ResMed, Corp. (RMD) to support sleep medicine research and care at the UC San Diego School of Medicine. The donation was made to the university in honor of ResMed’s founder and chairman of the board, Peter Farrell, M.D. ResMed is an international leader in the development of equipment to treat and manage sleep-disordered breathing and other respiratory conditions.

Chancellor’s and Revelle Medalists Announced

Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla will bestow the prestigious Chancellor’s Medal and Revelle Medal upon a distinguished group of honorees during UC San Diego’s Founders Celebration, which will take place Nov. 12-14.

UC San Diego Raises $177.5 Million to Break Campus Fundraising Record

Today, the University of California, San Diego celebrates its latest breakthrough—a record-breaking year of private support for the campus. UC San Diego raised 20 percent more during fiscal year 2014-15 compared to the previous year, with over 43,000 gifts and grants totaling $177.5 million.

Audrey Geisel Donates $3 Million to Renovate UC San Diego’s Iconic Geisel Library

San Diego philanthropist, literacy advocate, and longtime supporter of the University of California, San Diego, Audrey Geisel, has donated $3 million toward the renovation of the university’s iconic flagship building, Geisel Library. The gift kicks off a major initiative to transform and revitalize the interior public spaces of Geisel Library to meet the evolving needs of students, faculty, and other Library users in the digital age. Geisel’s gift will be used to renovate and update the entry level of Geisel Library, which opened in 1972 as the university’s Central Library. In 1995, the William Pereira-designed building—known by many as “the spaceship”—was named in honor of Audrey and her late husband, Theodor “Dr. Seuss” Geisel, in recognition of a major gift from Audrey Geisel.

UC San Diego Launches Japan Forum for Innovation and Technology

Fostering increased collaboration and innovation between Japan and San Diego, the University of California, San Diego has established the Japan Forum for Innovation and Technology (JFIT). The new program, which will be housed in UC San Diego’s School of Global Policy and Strategy (formerly School of International Relations and Pacific Studies), will serve as a hub for research on contemporary business, science and technology in Japan, as well as associated policies. The launch of the Japan Forum at UC San Diego was made possible by a $300,000 pledged gift from Japanese IT company, Broadband Tower, Inc.

UC San Diego today announced that its globally recognized School of International Relations and Pacific Studies (IR/PS) will be renamed to become the UC San Diego School of Global Policy and Strategy (GPS), effective July 1. The new name reflects the increasingly broadened scope of the school’s research impact worldwide. In addition to the name change, the school’s Master of Pacific and International Affairs (MPIA) degree will become a Master of International Affairs (MIA), a more standard degree awarded by international relations schools, that will also recognize students’ studies beyond the Pacific region.
