Nashaya Ross remembers walking home from Lincoln High School, thrilled that she had gotten into her top college choice: UC San Diego. But her excitement soon turned to anxiety. “I started thinking, ‘How am I going to pay for college?’ ” said Ross. “I had never felt so stressed. I had the grades and the knowledge, but there’s nothing you can do about money. I felt so powerless.”

Cymer Co-Founder Richard Sandstrom and Wife, Sandra Timmons Give $1.2 Million for Students

University of California, San Diego alumni Sandra Timmons and Richard Sandstrom, co-founder of Cymer, Inc., are passionate about their alma mater and helping future students achieve the same world-class education they received at UC San Diego. That’s why the couple recently pledged a gift of $1.2 million to the campus for student support through their charitable Timmstrom Family Fund. The gift will be split, per the donors’ wishes, to support graduate students in the Jacobs School of Engineering and undergraduates through the Chancellor’s Associates Scholars program.

Heart of San Diego Gala to Fete Fashion Designer Zandra Rhodes March 1

The 17th annual Heart of San Diego Gala, hosted by the University of California, San Diego Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center, will pay tribute to philanthropist and renowned fashion designer Zandra Rhodes on March 1 at The US Grant Hotel. In addition, the gala will celebrate the memory of the late Duane Roth, former CEO of Connect and a long-time supporter of the Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center who passed away last year. The event will include a cocktail reception, dinner and dancing.

Memorial Tribute to Late Actor and UC San Diego Alumnus James Avery Set for March 1

The University of California, San Diego will host a special tribute to James Avery, the late acclaimed actor, poet and UC San Diego graduate of 1976, on Saturday, March 1 at 2 p.m., at the campus’s Mandell Weiss Forum. The event, which is open to the public, will include an afternoon of theater, live music, personal reflections and poetry readings in Avery’s honor. Best known for his portrayal as the charismatic Uncle Phil Banks on “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” Avery was a classically trained UC San Diego actor and scholar. He died on December 31, 2013, due to complications from heart surgery. He was 68.

UC San Diego Chancellor Emerita Marye Anne Fox Honored With Clark Kerr Award

UC San Diego Chancellor Emerita Marye Anne Fox has been selected to receive the 2014 Clark Kerr Award for Distinguished Leadership in Higher Education. The award recognizes individuals who have made extraordinary and distinguished contributions to the advancement of higher education. It was established in 1968 as a tribute to the leadership and legacy of University of California President Emeritus Clark Kerr.

Five Winners Receive Tickets to Benefit Concert Featuring Nathan East

Five winners have been selected to receive two free tickets to attend Eastbound: Home, a special concert at UC San Diego, featuring world-renowned jazz bassist and alumnus Nathan East, ’78 on Feb. 1. The 10 contest tickets were donated by Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla.

From UC San Diego to the Grammys and Back

Chances are you have listened to UC San Diego alumnus Nathan East, ’78, all of your life. You just may not know it—yet. East is one of the world’s best bass guitarists, a Grammy nominee who has played with the likes of jazz, rock and pop royalty from Michael Jackson and Beyoncé, to Paul McCartney and Eric Clapton. On Feb. 1, East will return to his alma mater for a one-time public performance entitled “Eastbound: Home.” All proceeds will benefit scholarships for UC San Diego students.

San Diego Chargers President Donates $500,000 to New Athletic Performance Center

Students at the University of California, San Diego have something new to cheer about this season. Dean Spanos, chairman of the board and president of the San Diego Chargers, has pledged $500,000 to UC San Diego to support a new Athletic Performance Center. The gift will support the expansion of the existing Alex G. Spanos Training Facility, located at the north end of campus. The revamped facility will be renamed the Alex G. Spanos Athletic Performance Center.

UC San Diego Participates in National #GivingTuesday for Second Year

Black Friday and Cyber Monday now have a philanthropic counterpart: #GivingTuesday. The national day of giving—currently in its second year—is slated for Dec. 3. UC San Diego is once again participating as an official partner of #GivingTuesday, which encourages charitable giving and celebrates the spirit of philanthropy.
