From UC San Diego to the Grammys and Back

Chances are you have listened to UC San Diego alumnus Nathan East, ’78, all of your life. You just may not know it—yet. East is one of the world’s best bass guitarists, a Grammy nominee who has played with the likes of jazz, rock and pop royalty from Michael Jackson and Beyoncé, to Paul McCartney and Eric Clapton. On Feb. 1, East will return to his alma mater for a one-time public performance entitled “Eastbound: Home.” All proceeds will benefit scholarships for UC San Diego students.

San Diego Chargers President Donates $500,000 to New Athletic Performance Center

Students at the University of California, San Diego have something new to cheer about this season. Dean Spanos, chairman of the board and president of the San Diego Chargers, has pledged $500,000 to UC San Diego to support a new Athletic Performance Center. The gift will support the expansion of the existing Alex G. Spanos Training Facility, located at the north end of campus. The revamped facility will be renamed the Alex G. Spanos Athletic Performance Center.

UC San Diego Participates in National #GivingTuesday for Second Year

Black Friday and Cyber Monday now have a philanthropic counterpart: #GivingTuesday. The national day of giving—currently in its second year—is slated for Dec. 3. UC San Diego is once again participating as an official partner of #GivingTuesday, which encourages charitable giving and celebrates the spirit of philanthropy.

The magazine’s annual “College Rankings” considers how universities are “acting on behalf of the true public interest,” measuring institutions based on three criteria: social mobility, research and civic engagement.
