The University of California, San Diego placed first in SANDAG’s 2012 iCommute Rideshare Corporate Challenge, which encouraged employees at local companies and organizations to use alternative, sustainable commute choices—including carpool, vanpool, transit, biking, walking, teleworking or compressed workweek—during the month of October.

When David and Janice Katz sold their family business in Chicago, the couple looked forward to a full, active retirement in San Diego. They also planned to continue the philanthropic work that they had begun while in Chicago.

The San Diego chapter of ARCS® Foundation, Inc., awarded $232,500 in fellowships to support 31 graduate students at the University of California, San Diego, for the 2012-13 academic year. The ARCS Foundation, a national volunteer women’s organization, provides awards to top students studying science, medicine and engineering.

Sophomore Gracy Uriarte might not be attending classes at UC San Diego today had it not been for “Chicano Legacy – 40 Años,” a permanent campus art installation that depicts the struggles and dreams of underrepresented communities and pays tribute to social justice.

Briana Bilbray is only 25, yet she is undergoing the fight of her life—against melanoma. In addition to waging a battle against the disease, Briana is also working to raise awareness of the risks of melanoma, particularly among young people.

The Bernard Osher Foundation has donated $500,000 to the University of California, San Diego, establishing an endowment to provide scholarships for students transferring from the California Community Colleges System. These funds will support a new scholarship award for high-achieving student parents who transfer to UC San Diego and have financial need.

The University of California, San Diego’s international research program Pacific Rim Undergraduate Experiences (PRIME) recently received a pleasant surprise—a $100,000 gift from young alumna Haley Hunter-Zinck. The funds will support the greatest needs of the PRIME program, including assistance for future students who travel to the Pacific Rim to conduct research. Hunter-Zinck made the donation in memory of her late mother, Jennifer Zinck.

The University of California, San Diego has announced the recipients of the prestigious Chancellor’s Medals for 2012. Those chosen for the honor are Bob and Betty Beyster, Julia Brown, Peter and Peggy Preuss, and the late Arthur Brody, who passed away after he was selected to receive the award. The Chancellor’s Medal is one of the highest honors bestowed by UC San Diego to honor exceptional service in support of the university’s mission.
