The University of California, San Diego has announced the recipients of the prestigious Chancellor’s Medals for 2012. Those chosen for the honor are Bob and Betty Beyster, Julia Brown, Peter and Peggy Preuss, and the late Arthur Brody, who passed away after he was selected to receive the award. The Chancellor’s Medal is one of the highest honors bestowed by UC San Diego to honor exceptional service in support of the university’s mission.

During his career at the University of California, San Diego, Hugh “Bud” Mehan taught thousands of students in sociology and education studies over the course of nearly four decades. His impact spread far beyond the walls of the university into the local community and beyond.

Ryan Darby, ’04 and Vince Vasquez, ’02 met while earning their bachelor’s degrees in political science at UC San Diego. When the two friends learned how many military veterans would be returning to the region due to the U.S. combat role in Afghanistan winding down, they wanted to positively impact those who have sacrificed so much for their country.

The beach of La Jolla Shores will be home to a possible record-breaking line of surfboards on June 10, as hundreds of cancer survivors, caregivers, friends and surfers gather together in solidarity in the fight to wipe out cancer. As part of UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center’s 6th annual Survivor Beach, attendees will line surfboards along the shore, nose-to-tail, from Scripps Pier down La Jolla Shores, in a stunning visual display.

The 15th annual Fiesta de las Estrellas—a “celebration of the stars” hosted by the University of California, San Diego’s Hispanic Scholarship Council—will raise much-needed scholarship funding for ambitious and motivated UC San Diego students on April 18. Since its founding 15 years ago, the event has raised more than $1 million for undergraduate scholarships to help ensure that students from all backgrounds can access a world-class UC San Diego education.
