With dreams of seeing his name in lights on Broadway, UC San Diego theatre and dance major Brian Bose was astonished to learn that he had received the James Avery Scholarship to help support his educational studies at UC San Diego. The fund was established by UC San Diego alumnus and acclaimed actor and poet, James Avery ’76.

Heart di Vite, translated “heart of the vine,” is a unique fundraising event dedicated to the love of art, science and the environment. Heart di Vite, hosted by the University of California, San Diego’s Division of Biological Sciences, is slated for Sunday, Feb. 5 at 4 p.m. and will offer the best in sustainable food, wine and art while raising much-needed environmental science scholarships.

UC San Diego was named a 2012 “best value” public college, according to Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine. The national finance publication ranked UC San Diego 10th in the nation, up from 12th last year. The criteria used for the selection included cost and financial aid, average student debt, competitiveness, graduation rates and academic support.

After six years in a North Vietnamese “reeducation” camp, Thai Hoang Do’s father escaped to Thailand with five children and his wife in tow. It was in a refugee camp in Thailand that Thai Do—the youngest of six children—was born to the Do family. Seven years later, the family moved to the United States, settling in San Diego’s City Heights neighborhood.

Local philanthropist, community leader and UC San Diego supporter Anne Ratner has died at the age of 100. For more than six decades, Ratner has been a beloved volunteer and philanthropist in San Diego, actively supporting numerous arts, sciences, service and Jewish organizations.

Deng Bol counts himself fortunate to be a student at the University of California, San Diego. Born in Sudan, Bol survived the horrors of civil war, refugee camps and a dangerous trek through the African continent—all before he reached the age of 13.
