Transportation Services plays an important role in keeping UC San Diego moving, managing campus shuttles, the MTS Bus Zone program, parking and other alternative transportation options on campus and at the medical centers—all while helping position the university as one of the greenest in the nation.
Now, Transportation Services is evaluating the ongoing needs of the campus community with the goal of developing a plan for the future that is both environmentally and financially sustainable. As a student, member of UC San Diego’s faculty and staff, or as a university friend, you are invited to take a brief survey to voice your opinions at moveucsandiego.ucsd.edu.
“The survey will provide us with essential information regarding the services our customers value most and how we can best serve the campus community,” said Russell Thackston, assistant vice chancellor of Auxiliary and Plant Services. “The campus input we receive will play a key role in the development and implementation of our strategic plan to meet the needs of the campus community long into the future.”
UC San Diego Transportation Services has been successful over the past decade in encouraging campus commuters to use more alternative transportation. In 2001, 34 percent of commuters utilized alternative transportation, while nearly 60 percent use alternative means today. Yet, the increased costs associated with funding MTS bus services, campus shuttles and other alternative transportation programs have surpassed Transportation Services’ incoming revenue. As a result, Transportation Services—which is completely self-supporting and receives no state funding for services—is facing a financial shortfall that needs to be addressed so that the department can continue to serve the campus’s transportation needs.
