The University of California San Diego has opened the Brian & Nancy Malk Sunset Overlook, complete with a viewing platform, benches, pathways and accessible parking off La Jolla Shores Drive in La Jolla.
The Malks, who reside in La Jolla Shores, would frequently drive past the location and notice people gathered – often at sunset – on the sidewalk or in the backs of trucks to take in the spectacular view.
Brian Malk envisioned a deck where people of all ages and abilities could leisurely and safely enjoy the magnificence of the view. He reached out to the campus and proposed the project.
“UC San Diego’s team enthusiastically embraced the idea,” Brian Malk said. “Making this treasured view accessible for all to enjoy was our mutual goal.”
After significant planning, design and construction, the project was completed this month.
“UC San Diego is a treasured destination that shines brightly on multiple fronts – from groundbreaking research and education to innovative health care and vibrant arts programs – but it’s also a place of breathtaking natural beauty,” said Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla. “We are grateful to Nancy and Brian Malk for their meaningful gift, which has created a new space for campus and community members to safely and easily enjoy the majestic ocean views that have come to define our university’s spirit.”
The space surrounding the platform and pathway is planted with native, drought-tolerant vegetation. Site signage expresses respect for the land and the original people of the area where UC San Diego is located – and where the overlook stands – acknowledging that the university is built on the unceded territory of the Kumeyaay Nation.
Sharing an ideal that guides him, Brian Malk quoted Nelson Mandela: “It always seems impossible until it’s done.”
