University of California San Diego friend and supporter, Conrad Prebys died on Sunday, July 24, following a battle with cancer. The San Diego philanthropist and businessman was 82.

The late Mary Andrews Haag left more than $4.3 million from her estate to establish The Frederick and Mary Haag Scholarship Fund at the University of California San Diego. The scholarship bequest was directed from the Mary Andrews Haag Trusts to provide scholarships for outstanding UC San Diego undergraduates. Haag was a longtime San Diego resident and philanthropist. She died in November 2014, at the age of 92.

UC San Diego’s undergraduate student body has voted in favor of moving the campus’ 23-team intercollegiate athletics program to NCAA Division I. In a weeklong election, students voted in approval of a referendum that will result in increased student fees to cover the costs associated with a non-football Division I athletic program.

As a child in Vietnam, Huy Nguyen gazed up at the sky with wonder. Space travel and rockets captivated him. A career focused on our universe, however, seemed like unlikely, if not impossible. Yet with hard work, coupled with the support of his family and the community, Nguyen is now pursuing his lifelong passion as an aerospace engineering major at UC San Diego.

Swiss astronomer Michel Mayor, one of the world’s most renowned astrophysicists for planetary discovery, spoke at UC San Diego on March 23 as part of the 15th annual Kyoto Prize Symposium. The event, which was open to the public, inspired a wide range of attendees, from faculty to local high school students.

UC San Diego staff members have an opportunity to make their opinions heard on topics ranging from overall employee satisfaction to supportiveness of supervisors through the annual campus Staff@Work Survey. As part of the 2015 survey, respondents were also able to share their thoughts about the campus climate at UC San Diego via a new section created in partnership with the Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.

The gift of education is like no other—it can change lives, transform families and can never be lost or taken away. Last week, UC San Diego’s generous donors and scholarship recipients came together to celebrate the gift of education at the university’s annual Hearts and Scholars dinner. Students were able to meet and thank the benefactors who have helped make their educations possible, while donors were able to learn more about the impact of their support.
