Campus Survey@Work Results Are In

Each year, UC San Diego employees make their voices heard with the campus Staff@Work survey on topics ranging from treatment from supervisors to campus inclusion. This year, an impressive 63 percent of all staff members (represented and non-represented) took the survey, representing 640 units from across the entire campus.

Celebrate Division I Move at Spirit Night Feb. 9

UC San Diego made big news recently when the campus announced it will be moving to NCAA Division I as a member of the Big West Conference. UC San Diego Athletics has invited the entire campus community—students, faculty, staff and alumni—to celebrate this historic event at Spirit Night on Friday, Feb. 9.

UC San Diego Alumnus Gives $30 Million to UC San Diego

UC San Diego alumnus and Qualcomm co-founder Franklin Antonio is donating $30 million to the university in support of programmatic expansion of the UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering. In recognition of the generous gift, UC San Diego will name a planned building for engineering research and education Franklin Antonio Hall.

Movin’ On Up

UC San Diego celebrated a landmark announcement on Monday—the campus’ move to NCAA Division I Athletics. Community leaders including Mayor Kevin Faulconer and San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Jerry Sanders joined Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla in announcing that the Division I Big West Conference has invited UC San Diego to join its ranks.

Daniel Yankelovich, Public Opinion Expert and UC San Diego Supporter, Has Died

Nationally renowned public opinion expert Daniel Yankelovich spent more than six decades monitoring social change and public opinion. He also left a legacy of supporting research at the University of California San Diego, aimed at improving how people live. Yankelovich died on September 22 at home in La Jolla. He was 92.

Tata Institute for Genetics and Society Advances with Building Naming, Inaugural Chair Holders

UC San Diego celebrated the dedication of a new building for the divisions of Biological and Physical Sciences on Sept. 12 with a special announcement. The cutting-edge science building will bear the name Tata Hall for the Sciences, or Tata Hall, in recognition of a $70 million gift from the Tata Trusts, which was committed last year to create the binational Tata Institute for Genetics and Society.

UC San Diego Revelle Medalists Announced

Honoring the contributions of some of these outstanding current and former faculty members, the campus has announced the 2017 Revelle Medal recipients: emeriti faculty members Paul W. Drake, Marilyn Farquhar and Don Helinski.

Junior Seau Foundation Supports Brain Injury Studies and Education

Thanks to support from the Junior Seau Foundation, a room full of high school students from The Preuss School UCSD recently gathered at UC San Diego to learn about the science of the brain and traumatic brain injury prevention from neurobiology professor Gentry Patrick. The inaugural Junior Seau Lectureship program held on Dec. 14 kicked off a special announcement of the Junior Seau Foundation’s $250,000 gift to support brain injury research and education at UC San Diego.

Carnegie Corporation of New York Supports UC San Diego-Hosted International Talks on Northeast Asia

The University of California Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation, which is based at UC San Diego, received a grant of $500,000 to support the institute’s annual Northeast Asia Cooperation Dialogue (NEACD), a forum which convenes policy-level officials from China, Russia, North and South Korea, Japan and the United States to candidly discuss urgent security topics in Northeast Asia.
