The inaugural chair holder of the Junior Seau Foundation Endowed Chair in Traumatic Brain Injury at the University of California San Diego is Yishi Jin, Professor and Chair of the Section of Neurobiology in the Division of Biological Sciences. Jin’s research focuses on molecular genetic mechanisms underlying the development of the nervous system, and regeneration of wounded nervous systems, with the goal of better understanding human neurological disorders and brain injury.

The La Jolla Golden Triangle Rotary announced that the recipient of the 2018 Hahn Visionary Award is Scott Barton, principal of The Preuss School UCSD, a charter middle and high school on the University of California San Diego campus for low income students who strive to become the first in their families to graduate from college.

Each year, UC San Diego employees make their voices heard with the campus Staff@Work survey on topics ranging from treatment from supervisors to campus inclusion. This year, an impressive 63 percent of all staff members (represented and non-represented) took the survey, representing 640 units from across the entire campus.

UC San Diego alumnus and Qualcomm co-founder Franklin Antonio is donating $30 million to the university in support of programmatic expansion of the UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering. In recognition of the generous gift, UC San Diego will name a planned building for engineering research and education Franklin Antonio Hall.

UC San Diego celebrated a landmark announcement on Monday—the campus’ move to NCAA Division I Athletics. Community leaders including Mayor Kevin Faulconer and San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Jerry Sanders joined Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla in announcing that the Division I Big West Conference has invited UC San Diego to join its ranks.

Nationally renowned public opinion expert Daniel Yankelovich spent more than six decades monitoring social change and public opinion. He also left a legacy of supporting research at the University of California San Diego, aimed at improving how people live. Yankelovich died on September 22 at home in La Jolla. He was 92.
