Eliminating Food Waste for Good

As part of a University of California system-wide initiative, UC San Diego is committed to going zero waste by 2020. That means that at least 90 percent of campus waste will be diverted from landfills or incineration. The campus is already well on its way toward that goal with innovative programs to eliminate food waste, and help students who may be experiencing food insecurity at the same time.

When describing the ideal work environment, Vince Kellen, UC San Diego’s chief information officer, likes to use a sports illustration. He recounts the time when he sat next to an NHL recruiter at one of his son’s youth hockey games. Kellen asked the recruiter what he was looking for in the ideal player. Speed? Strength? Accuracy? None of those, said the recruiter.

IT Services Opens Tech Hub at the Hive

As part of the revamped IT Services offices, the department recently opened Tech Hub @ the Hive on the second floor of Torrey Pines Center South. The open space is reminiscent of an Apple Genius Bar, with open space and a walk-up counter for staff members to get on-the-spot IT support.

Kyoto Prize Symposium Returns March 20 with Famed Mathematician

The University of California San Diego will host a special delegation of international visitors on March 20, as part of the Kyoto Prize Symposium. The annual event—co-hosted by UC San Diego, San Diego State University, the University of San Diego and Point Loma Nazarene University—features talks from recipients of the prestigious Kyoto Prize, Japan’s highest honor for global visionaries who made scientific and cultural advancements that benefit mankind.

Ashoka U Exchange Draws Attendees from 25 Countries to UC San Diego

Hundreds of delegates from 25 different countries converged on campus last week for the 2019 Ashoka U Exchange to discuss how to more effectively make positive change around the globe. UC San Diego hosted this year’s Exchange, themed “Beyond Borders and Boundaries,” from Feb. 21 through 23.

Building Connections: Campus Celebrates Gilman Bridge Opening

Preuss School’s Tiffany Majors Honored as California Educator of the Year

Tiffany Majors, an English teacher at The Preuss School UC San Diego, has been named the statewide High School Educator of the Year by the California League of Schools. The Preuss School is a middle and high school located on the University of California San Diego campus for low-income students who strive to become the first in their families to graduate from college.
