Times Higher Education has placed the University of California, San Diego as the 40th top university in the publication’s World Reputation Rankings. The Reputation Rankings complement the Times’ annual World University Rankings, published in fall 2013, in which UC San Diego was also ranked 40th.

UC San Diego’s Sexual Assault & Violence Prevention Resource Center (SARC) has been successful in developing innovative and proactive violence prevention programs for the campus community. A new SARC program called “Who’s Checking You In/Out?” was recently launched reduce the risk of cyberstalking and increase online safety.

NAFTA, its impact and its future goals will be the center of UC San Diego’s Mexico Moving Forward symposium, to be held from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. March 6. The symposium, hosted by the Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies at the School of International Relations and Pacific Studies (IR/PS), will feature University of California President Janet Napolitano, UC San Diego Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla and IR/PS Dean Peter Cowhey, as well as experts from both sides of the border.

Robert Hooper knows the powerful role media can play in bringing about social justice. The UC San Diego alumnus who teaches courses on international conflict and the media at the School of International Relations and Pacific Studies (IR/PS) has worked intensively in nations facing ethnic, religious and sectarian conflict. He has led workshops on media and conflict resolution that enable journalists to report on ethnic and sectarian conflict in South and Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Eastern Europe. He has put himself in harm’s way through his career, and he credits his ability to do so to the foundation he built at UC San Diego.

The University of California, San Diego will host Military Pathways to College Success—a one-stop higher education conference for military service members and their families—from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Sat., Feb. 22, 2014 at the campus’s Price Center East Ballroom. The conference is designed to showcase the many transfer options available to service members, veterans and their dependents who are attending, or planning to attend a four-year university by way of a California community college.

Mexico’s most visionary leaders, vibrant culture, past accomplishments and future goals will be the focus of the University of California, San Diego’s Mexico Moving Forward symposium, from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on March 6. A memorial to honor student activism for peace was recently unveiled at Revelle College. The idea for the memorial was spurred by a group of students in Thurgood Marshall College’s Dimensions of Culture (DOC) program after they learned about the history of UC San Diego student activism during the Vietnam War.

The University of California, San Diego will honor the history and accomplishments of African-Americans during the university’s annual celebration of Black History Month. The theme for 2014 is “Recognizing the 50th Anniversary of Civil Rights: The journey is not complete, we can and must do more.”

The University of California, San Diego is one of the nation’s “best value” colleges and universities, according to The Princeton Review’s book, “The Best Value Colleges: 2014 Edition.” The education services company has included UC San Diego in its “Best Value Colleges” publication for more than a decade.

To many people, Angelica Gutierrez is an inspiration: The Palm Desert native is majoring in political science at UC San Diego and balances her busy study schedule with working as a peer educator and giving back to her community. But to Gutierrez, it’s her parents that are her true inspiration.
