Every qualified student who wants to go to college can and should go, regardless of family income. That was the message conveyed by UC San Diego Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla to hundreds of high school students Thursday.

Hillary Fitzmaurice, currently a student at Fullerton College in Orange County, hopes to study linguistics at UC San Diego. “I plan on applying for next fall and am very excited about the opportunities available for research,” she said. Fitzmaurice was one of the 160 prospective transfer students who attended the campus’s “Transfer Friday” event Oct. 11. The event was the first of three scheduled for the 2013-2014 academic school year.

UC San Diego is ranked 9th best public university and 39th best university in the 2014 Best Colleges guidebook’s national college rankings that included 281 public, private and for-profit institutions.

The University of California, San Diego is ranked the 14th best university in the world, up from 15th place last year, and its life sciences and engineering programs are ranked 7th and 13th respectively, according to the 2013 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU).
