They visited the Birch Aquarium tide pools under the stars, learned about cutting edge undergraduate research and even participated in a “Thriller” style flash mob. More than 2,200 students, parents, family members and friends participated in some 20 events as part of UC San Diego’s sixth annual Family Weekend.

Hillary Fitzmaurice, currently a student at Fullerton College in Orange County, hopes to study linguistics at UC San Diego. “I plan on applying for next fall and am very excited about the opportunities available for research,” she said. Fitzmaurice was one of the 160 prospective transfer students who attended the campus’s “Transfer Friday” event Oct. 11. The event was the first of three scheduled for the 2013-2014 academic school year.

The celebration, running from Sept. 27, 2013 through May 2014, will feature events that pay homage to the past, present and future cultures of Native American people in San Diego, the state and throughout the nation.
