A new online voting platform developed by UC San Diego alumnus Arshya “Ary” Sharifian and UC San Diego undergraduate Miles Minton now allows voters in North County San Diego to directly lobby their elected officials through weekly polls.

The University of California, San Diego has admitted 24,552 freshmen for the fall 2014 term. The new freshmen were selected from a record 73,437 applications. The university anticipates enrolling a diverse freshman class of 4,900 of students.

UC San Diego will join people around the world in celebrating Earth Week from April 21 to 25. The theme for the week of events, “Connecting the Drops,” helps illustrate the campus’s water-saving strategies and the need for individuals to conserve water as California faces a severe drought.

Hundreds of volunteers arrived on campus Saturday to welcome newly admitted freshmen to UC San Diego for Triton Day. Now in its third year, Triton Day is an annual event designed to inspire admitted freshmen to see themselves as future Tritons and accept their offer of admission from the campus. From greeting students and families in the parking lot to helping set up booths, answering questions and managing the schedule of entertainment, campus volunteers were involved in nearly every aspect of the day, helping to ensure it left a memorable first impression of UC San Diego.

A recent college salary report by PayScale.com ranks the University of California, San Diego the 15th best public university for its return on investment (ROI) for alumni who are California residents. In addition, UC San Diego is listed as having the 10th best ROI, out of 434 public colleges, for mid-career (15 year of experience) alumni who earn on average more than $100,000 annually.

César E. Chávez, civil rights advocate, labor leader and proponent of nonviolent activism, is the center of a series of celebratory events at the University of California, San Diego throughout the months of April and May. The events will include the performance of a one man show on Chávez, a presentation on the historic United Farm Workers (UFW) march to Sacramento in 1966, the celebration of the 44th anniversary of Chicano Park and more.

Mexico’s recent fiscal and energy reforms, new trade alliances, growing economy and evolving arts and culture were at the center of UC San Diego’s Mexico Moving Forward symposium held on campus March 6. Hosted by the Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies (USMEX) at UC San Diego’s School of International Relations and Pacific Studies (IR/PS), the symposium focused on “20 Years of NAFTA and Beyond” and assessed the impacts of the North American Free Trade Agreement, which officially began on Jan. 1, 1994.

The 2015 edition of the U.S. News & World Report’s Best Graduate Schools guidebook, released today, highly ranks the University of California, San Diego’s professional schools in engineering and medicine, as well as its academic Ph.D. programs in the sciences.

Times Higher Education has placed the University of California, San Diego as the 40th top university in the publication’s World Reputation Rankings. The Reputation Rankings complement the Times’ annual World University Rankings, published in fall 2013, in which UC San Diego was also ranked 40th.

UC San Diego’s Sexual Assault & Violence Prevention Resource Center (SARC) has been successful in developing innovative and proactive violence prevention programs for the campus community. A new SARC program called “Who’s Checking You In/Out?” was recently launched reduce the risk of cyberstalking and increase online safety.
