At age 20, Christie Milton-Toress was diagnosed with HIV and her husband, Angel, was diagnosed two months later with AIDS. Fortunately, their only child was born HIV negative. At the time in 1985, very few women were speaking out about their experiences with HIV. However, Toress became a spokesperson who advocated for the needs of families living with HIV/AIDS.

World AIDS Day will be recognized by the University of California, San Diego with a variety of programs from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Dec. 1, including a public viewing of portions of the AIDS Memorial Quilt.

Kicking off International Education Week, the University of California, San Diego was ranked 7th in the nation among doctoral institutions for the number of students who study abroad for a full academic year, according to the Institute of International Education (IIE) Open Doors report released yesterday.

UC San Diego’s proud tradition of supporting veterans was embraced Thursday at the twelfth annual Veterans Association Recognition Ceremony. At the event, Chuck Massy, a business officer at RIMAC Arena who formally served in the U.S. Navy, was honored with the Veteran of the Year award for his strong commitment to community service.

Students at the University of California, San Diego are giving back this holiday season with “Operation Santa,” an annual fundraising effort dedicated to helping families in need all over San Diego County. “Operation Santa” is a project of UC San Diego’s service fraternity, Alpha Phi Omega.
