Isaac Awolola—a former Navy Corpsman with degrees in math and computer science—credits going to the hospital to visit his dad as the inspiration to join the medical field. Now, he works as a registered nurse in the Medical/Surgical Telemedicine Unit at UC San Diego Medical Center in Hillcrest. LEGOLAND California’s Master Builders built a mini version of UC San Diego’s beloved Geisel Library using more than 30,000 LEGO bricks. The library is featured in the theme park’s new exhibition, MINILAND San Diego. UC San Diego is honored to have been included in the exhibition as one of San Diego’s most recognizable landmarks and architectural wonders.

This Mental Health Awareness Month, we’re highlighting quiet campus spots for peace and inspiration. Amid the hustle and bustle of life at UC San Diego, consider venturing off the beaten path to reflect, balance your emotions and boost your well-being. At the UC San Diego Women’s Center, located in Student Center West, a big purple couch in the living room serves as an inviting spot where members of the campus community can take a moment to rest and recharge. Also available in the center are a community kitchen, a lending library, a family-friendly space with baby changing stations and a private lactation room for nursing mothers. The Women’s Center provides education and support surrounding gender issues, with the goal of promoting an inclusive and equitable campus community.

The School of Arts and Humanities celebrated the opening of the UC San Diego Center for Taiwan Studies with a community celebration in early May. Established with an endowment from longtime campus supporters Chiu-Shan Chen Ph.D. ’69 and Rufina Chen, the new center aims to connect local and international communities with diverse events and programming that expands the cultural understanding of Taiwan and Taiwanese Americans.
