UC San Diego Mourns the Loss of “Mrs. Seuss” Audrey Geisel

The Design Lab at the University of California San Diego, under the direction of founder Don Norman, has received a $250,000 gift from global communications company, Viasat Inc. (NASDAQ: VSAT). The investment will support efforts at the Design Lab’s Center for Design-Driven Transformation (CDDT) to assist companies in using leading-edge design tools and perspectives to stay competitive in an ever-changing business landscape. Viasat was founded by Mark Dankberg and two UC San Diego alumni, Steve Hart and Mark Miller.
The University of California San Diego received a record-breaking $1.37 billion in total research and philanthropic funding during fiscal year 2017-18. The funding drives impactful research to solve some of the world’s most pressing issues and supports other important initiatives including student support, faculty recruitment, campus improvements and more.
Steffanie Strathdee, PhD, associate dean of global health sciences at University of California San Diego School of Medicine, was named today one of TIME magazine’s 50 Most Influential People in Health Care for 2018, which identifies people who “have changed the state of health care in America this year, and bear watching for what they do next.”
The Dr. Herbert and Nicole Wertheim Family Foundation has pledged $25 million to the University of California San Diego as a lead gift to usher in a new era of public health research, education and advances that will promote healthier populations on a local, national and global scale because of the university’s increased focus on public health.
UC San Diego Department of Visual Arts artist Heejung Shin is awarded the inaugural David Antin Prize. Named after poet, artist and founding member of the department, the prize is given to a graduating MFA student who shows originality and creativity in art practice or criticism.
