November 16, 2015 — Christopher J. Kane, M.D., a renowned specialist in prostate cancer and an expert in robotic and other minimally invasive procedures for urologic surgery at the University of California, San Diego, has been appointed the inaugural holder of the Joseph D. Schmidt, MD Presidential Chair in Urology in the School of Medicine.

November 12, 2015 — A key earthquake monitoring network operated by UC San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography will continue with funding support from Seismic Warning Systems Inc. The $700,000 gift will sponsor operations of the ANZA Seismic Network, which features earthquake monitoring stations in San Diego and Riverside counties. The state-of-the art system provides the best coverage of the San Jacinto fault zone, considered the most active fault in Southern California.

November 9, 2015 — Teachers often inspire students, but students can move teachers, too. Such was the case during a recent visit to UC San Diego’s Department of Theatre and Dance by long-time educator and arts supporter Lois Chant. Her $1.25 million legacy gift will boost the department’s efforts to continue its top-ranked theater training program.

Now, The Judith and Neil Morgan Endowed Fellowship at UC San Diego will carry forth their spirit of civic engagement, passion for writing and love of learning and discourse by supporting exceptional graduate students in the humanities and social sciences.

October 22, 2015 — UC San Diego officially opened its new Alex G. Spanos Athletic Performance Center Wednesday with several members of the Spanos family alongside many Triton student-athletes and coaches at the ribbon cutting ceremony.

September 21, 2015 — Arthur Wagner, founding chair of the University of California, San Diego Department of Theatre and Dance and philanthropist of the arts, has died. He was 92.

August 25, 2015 — UC San Diego joins MIT and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as elite campuses selected to be part of the Sloan Foundation's Minority Ph.D. Program, and the foundation recently announced the first computer science student at UC San Diego to become a Sloan Scholar.

August 17, 2015 — The University of California, San Diego’s 12th annual Dinner in the Library will take place Friday, Sept. 18 in the university’s iconic Geisel Library building. The event, which is open to the public, will celebrate the theme “Building for the Future,” with proceeds supporting the UC San Diego Library’s collections, services and learning spaces. Festivities will include dinner and cocktails, a silent auction and a keynote talk from Sarah Thomas, vice president for the Harvard Library.

August 3, 2015 — A $300,000 gift from the Moxie Foundation will support computer scientists at the University of California, San Diego who are researching and developing high-tech assistive technology to help individuals with disabilities.

July 30, 2015 — When University of California, San Diego alumnus and biotechnology pioneer David Goeddel, ’72, pledged a gift of $400,000 to establish the David V. Goeddel Endowed Graduate Fellowship at UC San Diego, his goal was to support and foster the innovators and scientists of the future. The endowed fund, which will be matched in full by the UC San Diego Division of Biological Sciences, will annually support the research and scholarly activities of outstanding Biological Sciences graduate students. The inaugural Goeddel fellowship recipients will use the funding to bolster leading-edge research focused on topics ranging from finding better treatments for diseases such as Parkinson’s, to understanding the metabolism of cells in tissues and organs, to studying cyanobacteria as a bio-production platform for renewable fuels.
