May 27, 2015 — Steven Schick, a percussionist, conductor, author and distinguished professor of music at UC San Diego, is known for charging into new frontiers of contemporary music. As a soloist and director, he has performed with and led numerous local and international ensembles. In support of his teaching, research and service activities, Schick has been appointed the inaugural holder of the Reed Family Presidential Chair in the Division of Arts and Humanities.

May 20, 2015 — Fostering increased collaboration and innovation between Japan and San Diego, the University of California, San Diego has established the Japan Forum for Innovation and Technology (JFIT). The new program, which will be housed in UC San Diego’s School of Global Policy and Strategy (formerly School of International Relations and Pacific Studies), will serve as a hub for research on contemporary business, science and technology in Japan, as well as associated policies. The launch of the Japan Forum at UC San Diego was made possible by a $300,000 pledged gift from Japanese IT company, Broadband Tower, Inc.

May 7, 2015 — When he realized he had neither the talent nor the dedication to be a career musician, San Diego builder Conrad Prebys chose a different path. But his passion for music never wavered, and since 2007, he has generously given to the Division of Arts and Humanities at the University of California, San Diego to help ensure that the facilities, faculty and programs will continue to launch students into successful music careers.

April 7, 2015 — With a $30 million lead gift in 2004, Evelyn and Ernest Rady and the Rady Family Foundation helped establish UC San Diego’s world-class, entrepreneurial business school—the Rady School of Management. They also contributed $5 million toward the expansion of the business school’s campus, and gave other significant gifts to ensure excellence at the school. Today UC San Diego announced that the Rady Family Foundation has made a $100 million commitment to help recruit and retain faculty and fund strategic priorities at the Rady School of Management.

April 6, 2015 — Audiences who attend an ArtPower! event don’t just watch a performance—they engage with the artists and get a taste of the creative process. On Sunday, April 26, philanthropists will enjoy a sampling of the organization’s unique approach at the University of California, San Diego’s annual Big Bang at ArtPower! fundraiser. Co-chaired by Joan Jordan Bernstein and Martha Dennis, the celebration includes a festive lunch, a live master class with a UC San Diego student string quartet and a special performance by members of the acclaimed Amphion String Quartet. The event is open to the public and all proceeds will benefit the organization’s student engagement programs, with the goal of creating the ArtPower! Student Engagement Endowment Fund.

March 30, 2015 — A group of valiant African American World War I soldiers—often referred to as the “Harlem Hellfighters”—brought with them to Europe one of America’s most enduring exports: jazz. The 19th Annual Lytle Scholarship Concert at UC San Diego will take a trip through time and pay homage to those brave men with the concert entitled, “Harlem Hellfighters: Jazz Goes to War.” The concert will take place Sunday, April 19 at 3 p.m. in the Conrad Prebys Concert Hall. All proceeds from the event will benefit undergraduate scholarships at UC San Diego.

March 26, 2015 — James Noraky knows exactly what ignited his interest in pursuing a career in research: It was his experience at The Preuss School UCSD, a charter middle and high school for low-income students who strive to become the first in their families to graduate from college. During his time at Preuss, Noraky recalls undertaking a variety of science fair projects, a requirement at the school. His projects were often creative and ambitious – once, he experimented with using sound waves as a means of refrigeration. Another time he developed control circuitry that allowed muscles in the forearms to control prosthetic hands.

March 23, 2015 — As educators, they inspire students to be passionate about learning; as researchers, their advancements have international impact; and as citizens, they promote equitable access to education. Six UC San Diego faculty members will be honored at the 41st annual Chancellor’s Associates Faculty Excellence Awards for going above and beyond to make a positive impact in their teaching, research and service. The recognition ceremony will be held Thursday, April 2 at 5:30 p.m. in Atkinson Hall at the Qualcomm Institute.

February 11, 2015 — Reflecting its emergence as a regional hub for unparalleled clinical care, research, education and community service, the UC San Diego Shiley Eye Center has been renamed the UC San Diego Donald P. and Darlene V. Shiley Eye Institute, encompassing the Shiley Eye Center, the Anne F. and Abraham Ratner Children’s Eye Center, the Hamilton Glaucoma Center and the Joan and Irwin Jacobs Retina Center.

November 4, 2014 — This year marks the inaugural Celebrate Hope dinner at UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center, honoring and fundraising for services provided by Moores Cancer Center’s Patient and Family Support Services team, as well as featuring the culinary artistry of several celebrity chefs.
