January 19, 2016 — The University of California, San Diego is celebrating the 20th annual Lytle Scholarship Concert with renowned jazz trumpeter Gilbert Castellanos and the Mambo Messengers on Sunday, Jan. 31 at 3 p.m., at the Department of Music’s Conrad Prebys Concert Hall. For two decades, the annual concert has raised funds for the Lytle Scholarship Endowment, which benefits UC San Diego undergraduate students.

January 14, 2016 — Alumni play a key role in a university’s fundraising efforts. Casey and Matthew Shen are prime examples. The University of California, San Diego alumni couple recently donated one-half million dollars to their alma mater to establish the Casey and Matthew Shen Endowment to support graduate student fellowships in the Department of Literature.

December 21, 2015 — Papers of the late J. Robert “Bob” Beyster, founder of Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC), and a business innovator who developed a successful blueprint for entrepreneurial, employee-empowered companies, are being donated to the UC San Diego Library by the Beyster family

December 21, 2015 — Learning Equality, a non-profit organization based at the University of California, San Diego Qualcomm Institute, has successfully funded a crowdsourcing campaign to launch Kolibri, an offline education application that aims to enable universal education in areas of the world without Internet access.

December 8, 2015 — Parkinson’s disease is difficult to diagnose, particularly in its early stages. Now, researchers at University of California, San Diego School of Medicine – aided by a $375,000 grant from The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research (MJFF) – hope to improve the prospects of early diagnosis by identifying a biological signpost in the blood.

November 25, 2015 — Since 2007, UC San Diego’s Operation Santa has provided Christmas celebrations for 731 San Diego families who are facing financial hardship. Many of the families served by Operation Santa are led by single mothers as well as those who are victims of domestic violence, facing illness, experiencing the loss of a family member or struggling financially. Each year, Alpha Phi Omega encourages community members to nominate families in need and gives individuals and organizations the opportunity to participate as “adopters.” Operation Santa matches families with “adopters” who, after receiving the nominated family’s gift wish list, buy, wrap and deliver holiday presents to families by Dec. 24. As Operation Santa has grown over the years, Alpha Phi Omega has seen a rise in the number of families nominated to receive help during the holiday season; however, the number of nominated families continues to outpace adopters: the ratio of nomination applications to adoption applications is 4 to 1.

November 16, 2015 — Qualcomm has helped shape UC San Diego into what it is today—a catalyst for economic, social and scientific impact. Most recently, Qualcomm established an endowment for the UC San Diego School of Global Policy and Strategy’s 21st Century China Program.
