UC San Diego Foundation Welcomes 10 New Trustees

Comprised of distinguished community members, university administrators and faculty and alumni representatives, the University of California San Diego Foundation Board of Trustees works to connect the university with community partners to obtain resources needed to launch innovative programs. To ensure the continued success and growth of the campus, six new trustees and four returning trustees will join the 2016-17 Foundation board.

The Foundation is governed by 42 trustees and seven emeriti chairs who help advance the university’s fundraising efforts. This philanthropic support drives innovation at UC San Diego, enabling our students and scholars to develop answers to society’s most pressing issues and make our world a better place.

The Foundation accepts, administers and invests all private gifts to the university and manages the funds either as endowments or as funds available for current expenditure. As of June 30, 2016, the total combined endowment for the campus was $1.177 billion, managed by the UC San Diego Foundation and the UC Regents.

“The UC San Diego Foundation Board plays a critical role in the growth and success of our campus by building interest and support for our wide-ranging initiatives and programs,” said Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla. “We are pleased to welcome this year’s new and returning trustees, who help to support our students, faculty and staff, and propel UC San Diego's excellence.”

This year’s four new trustees include:

Laurie Black

Laurie Black

President and CEO, LJ Black Consulting; President of RS Lawrence Development

Laurie Black has played an active role in the San Diego political and business landscape for more than 30 years. She served as a San Diego Port Commissioner from 2007-09 and helped create the Green Port Program. Previously she was President of the Downtown San Diego Partnership, and helped with implementation of the Clean and Safe Program. Black received a bachelor’s degree from San Diego State University.

Pratik Shah

Pratik Shah

Business Leader

Pratik Shah was most recently the CEO of Auspex Pharmaceuticals, a public biotechnology company that was acquired by Teva Pharmaceuticals in 2015. Shah was a venture capitalist for almost a decade and has served on several private and public boards. Prior to that he was a consultant with McKinsey & Company. He holds a bachelor’s degree from UC Irvine and both a doctorate and an M.B.A. from the University of Chicago.

Jeff Silberman

Jeff Silberman

President and CEO, Carleton Management, Inc.

In 2004, Jeff Silberman became president and CEO of Carleton Management, Inc., his family's real estate investment, management and development business. Silberman was previously affiliated as a business lawyer with Solomon Ward Seidenwurm & Smith. He joined the firm in 1986, became a partner in 1989, and became its youngest managing partner in 2000, a position he held for three years. Silberman also served as past chair of the Jewish Community Foundation Board of Directors. He earned a B.S. from UC Berkeley and a law degree from UCLA.

Victor A. Vilaplana

Victor A. Vilaplana

Litigation Attorney, Foley & Lardner LLP

Victor A. Vilaplana is of counsel and attorney with a focus on insolvency matters, particularly business bankruptcies and international transactions. He is a member of the firm’s Bankruptcy and Business Reorganizations; International and Latin America Practices; and Automotive Industry Team. Vilaplana lectures on topics such as real estate ownership, commercial law and debtor-creditor relations. He received a B.A. from SDSU, an M.A. from George Washington University and a J.D. from Stanford University.

Richard Hertzberg

Chairman, CEO and President, ENPEX Corp.

Richard Hertzberg leads ENPEX Corp., a privately held energy company involved in the creation, financing, construction and operation of cogeneration projects, oil and gas production and alternative energy projects. He previously worked as an energy official in the Ford and Carter administrations and is past chairman of UC San Diego’s Chancellor’s Associates. Hertzberg received a bachelor’s degree from Colgate University and a Master’s degree from Columbia University.

Kenneth Kroner

Kenneth Kroner

Retired Senior Managing Director, Global Head of Multi-Asset Strategies, Head and Chief Investment Officer of Scientific Active Equity, BlackRock, Inc.

Kenneth Kroner began his career with Barclay’s Global Investors (BGI) in 1994, which later merged with BlackRock in 2009. He led teams responsible for BGI's asset allocation, global macro, currency, active commodity, fund of hedge funds and client solutions businesses. Previously, Kroner was an associate professor of economics and finance at the University of Arizona. He received a B.A. from the University of Alberta and a doctorate from UC San Diego.

Jerrilyn Malana

Chief Deputy for Employment/Special Advisor, San Diego County District Attorney’s Office

A UC San Diego graduate, Jerrilyn Malana spent more than 16 years as an employment law attorney and shareholder with Littler Mendelson, P.C. before joining the District Attorney’s Office. She is the immediate past President of the UC San Diego Alumni Association and served as President of the San Diego County Bar Association in 2009. Malana received a B.A. from UC San Diego, an M.B.A. from Chaminade University and a J.D. from California Western School of Law.

Kwan So

Kwan So has over 40 years of international real estate experience, including acquisition, property management, sales, marketing development and construction. He was also in the banking business for 18 years. He has served nearly two decades on the International Advisory Board for the School of Global Policy and Strategy and provides counsel regarding business between the U.S. and China. So received a bachelor’s degree from Georgia Institute of Technology and Master’s degree with honors from MIT.

This year, the Foundation Board also welcomes a new faculty representative, Professor Ulrike Schaede, as well as a new Alumni Board President, Robert Brownlie,’85.

Professor of Japanese Business; Director, Japan Forum of Innovation and Technology; Executive Director, Center on Global Transformation, School of Global Policy and Strategy, UC San Diego

UC San Diego Foundation Faculty Representative

Ulrike Schaede is a leading authority on Japanese business organization, strategy and management. She leads the Japan Forum for Innovation and Technology and the Center on Global Transformation, as well as the International Management Track at GPS. She has spent over nine years as a student, professor and visiting scholar in Japan at institutes such as Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. Schaede received a Master’s degree from Friedrich-Wilhelms Universität Bonn and doctorate from Philipps-Universität Marburg in Germany.

Robert Brownlie

Managing Partner, San Diego Office of DLA Piper

UC San Diego Alumni Board President

Robert Brownlie, a UC San Diego graduate, concentrates in the representation of corporations and their officers and directors in complex business, securities and corporate litigation, particularly class action and derivative litigation, and related Securities and Exchange Commission and criminal investigations and enforcement actions. He received a B.S. from UC San Diego and a J.D. from UC Davis.
