$11.8 Million in Support from Gary and Mary West to Launch Geriatric Emergency Department

Local philanthropists Gary and Mary West have provided $11.8 million to the University of California San Diego to create a state-of-the-art senior emergency care unit to be housed within the Emergency Department at the future Jacobs Medical Center. The Gary and Mary West Senior Emergency Care Unit will enhance care for older adults and enable a multi-year medical research initiative in partnership with the West Health Institute to support their mission of making successful aging a reality for seniors in San Diego and the nation.

UC San Diego’s Iconic Geisel Library to Open New Café May 3, 2016

Tuesday, May 3, 2016, marks the grand opening for Audrey’s, the new and long-awaited café in Geisel Library, the University of California San Diego’s flagship building. Daisies—as well as coffee, tea and other treats— will be plentiful at the new café, named for Audrey Geisel, the Library’s long-time friend and generous benefactor.

Philanthropists Ignite the Fight Against Cancer at SPARK Gala April 16

To rally the San Diego region in the fight against cancer, the University of California San Diego’s Moores Cancer Center will host its annual SPARK Gala on Saturday, April 16 at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar. The evening will include a three-course dinner with wine pairings, a live luxury auction and dancing. All proceeds will benefit Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego Health.

The long-awaited Geisel Library café won’t open its doors until spring 2016, but, already, it’s earned an “A.” But, this “A” is not the coveted grade, it’s for Audrey, specifically Audrey Geisel, the generous benefactor of the University of California, San Diego Library for whom the new café will be named.

UC San Diego is No. 14 on the Peace Corps Top Colleges List

The University of California, San Diego has been ranked 14th nationally among large schools on the 2016 Peace Corps list of colleges and universities that produce the most Peace Corps Volunteers, moving up one spot from last year. This marks the sixth consecutive year that UC San Diego has been named in the organization’s top 15 rankings and the 10th straight year that the campus has appeared in the top 25.

Presidential Advisor John Holdren to Speak at UC San Diego

John Holdren, President Barack Obama’s senior science and technology advisor, will speak at the University of California, San Diego for the fifth annual Herb York Memorial Lecture on Monday, Feb. 29. A keynote event for the UC Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation (IGCC), the visit is cosponsored by the School of Global Policy and Strategy and Jacobs School of Engineering.

UC San Diego Theatre Production Broadcast to Reach Millions

The University of California, San Diego Division of Arts and Humanities recently sponsored, “The Scarlet Stone,” a modern dance/theater retelling of a tragic Persian myth developed by Shahrokh Yadegari, professor of sound design in the Department of Theatre and Dance. The production was performed last summer at UC San Diego’s Mandell Weiss Forum, toured to Toronto—for the Tirgan Festival, the largest Persian arts festival in the western hemisphere—and then to Los Angeles at UCLA's Royce Hall. This production, which involves university faculty and alumni, is now set to reach more than 14 million viewers worldwide through four satellite broadcasts during the week of Feb. 8 on BBC Persian in Iran, Tajikistan and Afghanistan, and online streaming at the time of broadcast.

Heart of San Diego Raises Funds for UC San Diego Health Cardiovascular Care Feb. 20
