July 23, 2015 — Dr. Seuss fans will not want to miss a book launch on Tuesday, July 28 in UC San Diego’s Geisel Library, to celebrate the release of the new Dr. Seuss book, What Pet Should I Get?. At the event, the UC San Diego Bookstore will be selling a limited number of copies of the new book, which will be released publicly by Random House on July 28.

July 20, 2015 — New rankings name the University of California, San Diego the fourth best public university in the U.S. and the 21st best university in the world. The rankings by the Center for the World University Rankings (CWUR) are based on quality of research, faculty, influence, enterprise and successful alumni.

July 20, 2015 — The Rady School of Management at UC San Diego has launched a Master of Science in Business Analytics (MSBA) degree program. This intensive new program will offer hands-on training to prepare students to use data and analytics to identify business opportunities, generate business insights and create business solutions.

July 8, 2015 — Marcia McNutt, a prominent geophysicist, national leader in science, and alumna of Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego, has been nominated to become the next president of the National Academy of Sciences.

July 2, 2015 — The University of California, San Diego has admitted a record 26,502 freshmen and 8,150 transfers for the fall 2015 term. The number of new freshmen is up 1,969 compared to last year and there is also an increase among transfer admits by 874 students.

June 17, 2015 — A team of researchers led by bioengineers at the University of California, San Diego provide new insights on how hearts “stay young” and keep functioning over a lifetime despite the fact that most organisms generate few new heart cells. Identifying key gene expression changes that promote heart function as organisms age could lead to new therapy targets that address age-related heart failure.

June 9, 2015 — The Policy Design and Evaluation Lab (PDEL), based at the University of California, San Diego School of Global Policy and Strategy (GPS), announced today that it is a Grand Challenges Explorations winner, an initiative funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. PDEL faculty affiliates Claire Adida, assistant professor of political science in the UC San Diego Division of Social Sciences, and Jennifer Burney, assistant professor at GPS, will pursue an innovative global health and development research project titled “Mobile Money, Schooling, and the Poor.”

June 4, 2015 — Some 8,364 graduating students of the University of California, San Diego will gather to hear commencement speeches from dynamic speakers such as alumnus J. Craig Venter, a biochemist, geneticist and entrepreneur; Frank Bruni, New York Times op-ed columnist; alumnus Dan Santat, author and illustrator; and Christina Figueres, United Nations Executive Secretary. The students will participate in the campus’s 11 commencement events, with the majority of ceremonies taking place June 13-14, preceded by the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences May 16 and the School of Medicine’s June 7 graduation.

May 14, 2015 — Representatives from the first seven companies admitted into the Qualcomm Institute Innovation Space wowed the campus community at a press briefing and networking reception to mark the official opening of the new 6,000-square-foot facility inside Atkinson Hall on the UC San Diego campus. The event took place May 7.

May 13, 2015 — Meet Tinker the Robot. UC San Diego mechanical engineering alumnus (2007) Kay Yang created him to teach and inspire young children to play with robots.
