October 8, 2015 — Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego, has named UC San Diego alumnus Harry Helling as its new executive director. Helling, who started his career more than 30 years ago as an associate curator at the T. Wayland Vaughan Aquarium on the Scripps Oceanography campus, is a passionate leader with extensive experience communicating and interpreting science for the public.

October 6, 2015 — The University of California, San Diego is named the 19th best university in the world in U.S. News and World Report’s second-annual global rankings, released today. The campus is one of only five public universities in the U.S. to make the top 20 in the list of the world’s top 750 colleges. The rankings measure factors such as research, global and regional reputation, international collaboration as well as number of highly-cited papers and doctorates awarded. The U.S. News Best Global Universities 2016 edition also features 22 subject rankings, in which UC San Diego received high marks for its academic areas, such as pharmacology and toxicology (4), neuroscience and behavior (6), biology and biochemistry (6), psychiatry and psychology (7), computer science (9), as well as molecular biology and genetics (10).

October 5, 2015 — MacArthur Fellow Carrie Mae Weems reflects on her journey as an award-winning artist, negotiating the contradictions and intricacies of racism, sexism, class, gender roles and political systems in a presentation at UC San Diego entitled, “Color: Real and Imagined,” Oct. 12, 7:00 p.m., at the Price Center West Ballroom. Free and open to the public.

September 25, 2015 — The Qualcomm Insitute will demo and display research and technologies in the Family, Imaging, Drone and Robotics Zones at the Faire, which takes place Oct. 3-4 in Balboa Park.

September 22, 2015 — In 2014, only 10 of the nation’s 132 pharmacy schools achieved a 100 percent pass rate on first-time attempts at the North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination (NAPLEX). The University of California, San Diego Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences was one of them, passing all 54 students who took the exam for the first time.

September 21, 2015 — Arthur Wagner, founding chair of the University of California, San Diego Department of Theatre and Dance and philanthropist of the arts, has died. He was 92.

September 21, 2015 — The theme for the University of California, San Diego’s 10th annual California Native American Day celebration is “Unsettled Stories: Reclaiming This Land,” and will include a kickoff event Sept. 25 as well as an undergraduate research symposium, a Native American film festival, spoken word performances, a powwow and more throughout the 2015-16 academic year.

September 17, 2015 — The New York Times has named the University of California, San Diego the nation’s No. 4 school in its College Access Index, measuring which colleges and universities do the most for low-income students.

September 9, 2015 — Researchers at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego have released details of a deep-sea site roughly 48 kilometers (30 miles) west of Del Mar (just north of San Diego, Calif.) where methane is seeping out of the seafloor, the first such finding in the region.

September 9, 2015 — The University of California, San Diego is ranked the 9th best public university in the nation, according to U.S. News & World Report’s 2016 Best Colleges guidebook, which was released today. In addition, UC San Diego is named the 39th best university in the U.S. among more than 200 public, private and for-profit institutions.
