A 2009 graduate of Preuss—a charter middle and high school for motivated, low-income students whose parents have not graduated from college—Thomas was born to Mexican and Panamanian immigrants who had little more than a high school education.

The Preuss School UCSD was honored with the Local Peacemaker Award by the National Conflict and Resolution Center (NCRC), a San Diego-based nonprofit organization specializing in alternative conflict resolution services, mediation training and credentialing. The Preuss School was honored during NCRC’s 25th annual Peacemaker Awards, which recognizes individuals and organizations for their creative and effective collaborations and solutions to crises and conflict.

They represent diverse fields ranging from biology to political science and family medicine to literature, but six University of California, San Diego professors now share something in common: They are all recipients of Chancellor’s Associates Faculty Excellence Awards. Starting next week, UC San Diego students, faculty and staff will have the opportunity to share their opinions by participating in the University of California Campus Climate Study Survey. The systemwide effort—believed to be the largest survey of its kind ever conducted—asks more than 430,000 individuals about their experiences with diversity and inclusion at work and on campus.

Several University of California, San Diego graduate students will receive full financial support over the next few years thanks to an additional $500,000 gift from the Robertson Foundation for Government. This most recent gift is an extension of the foundation’s initial commitment of $450,000, which was pledged in 2010 and created the Robertson Fellows Program at UC San Diego’s School of International Relations and Pacific Studies (IR/PS).

For Nobel laureate Roger Tsien, the drive to help find a cure for cancer stems from personal experience. His father battled prostate cancer and ultimately lost his life to pancreatic cancer. As a professor of pharmacology, chemistry and biochemistry at UC San Diego and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator, he has worked to develop a novel way to image and possibly even deliver specially targeted drugs to cancer tumors.
