Preuss Senior Follows in Sister’s Footsteps, Receives Gates Millennium Scholarship

For Daniel Million, learning recently that he was one of two seniors at The Preuss School UCSD to receive the prestigious Gates Millennium Scholarship was more than a “huge relief,” it also had special significance. Just three years earlier, his sister Miriam received the same scholarship during her senior year at Preuss. Being awarded the scholarships meant their family would not have to worry about how to pay for college as Gates Millennium Scholars have all college costs covered through graduation.

Students Vote on Fee Referendum to Implement New Transit Pass

Undergraduate and graduate students at UC San Diego are voting on a fee referendum this week that will determine whether a new transit pass program will begin this fall. The referendum was initiated by students in response to Transportation Services’ need to make changes to address ongoing budget shortfalls. The department is entirely self-supporting and receives no state funds or revenue from student fees for the essential services it provides to the campus community.

UC San Diego Receives ‘All-Star Award’ From SANDAG’s iCommute Program

The University of California, San Diego received the “All-Star Award” as part of the San Diego Association of Government’s (SANDAG) annual iCommute Diamond Awards. The “All-Star Award” recognizes a past Diamond Award winner with longstanding commuter programs who has demonstrated a sustained commitment to transportation choices for employees through new/expanded programming. UC San Diego has received three Diamond Awards in the last five years: One in the University/College category, one for Program Excellence and another for Innovation.

The Preuss School UCSD Ranked Best High School in San Diego County by U.S. News & World Report

The Preuss School UCSD—a charter middle and high school for motivated, low-income students who strive to become the first in their families to graduate from college—has been ranked the best high school in San Diego County by U.S. News & World Report, which recently released its annual list of “Best High Schools.” Located on the campus of the University of California, San Diego, the school is also ranked the 5th best high school in California, the 10th best charter school in the country and 42nd overall in the nation.

For Jonathan Wosen, his love of science blossomed when he attended The Preuss School UCSD, a charter middle and high school for motivated, low-income students who strive to become the first in their families to graduate from college. Inspired by his teachers and the challenging, yet fun, classes, he became an active member of the Science Bowl and Lego Robotics teams in addition to other activities. He graduated from Preuss as co-valedictorian in 2009 and went on to receive his undergraduate degree in biology with a concentration in biochemistry and molecular biology from Williams College.

Smart Car Meets Smart Charger at UC San Diego

Call it an electronic meeting of the minds: Smart cars will meet smart chargers in the nation’s first demonstration of the next generation of “Smart Cars.” Known as the Intelligent Charging Project, the California Energy Commission-funded endeavor brings together smart fortwo electric drives from Daimler, electric vehicle charging stations supplied by RWE – Germany’s second largest utility – and the University of California, San Diego as the demonstration site.

40th Faculty Excellence Awards Honors Outstanding Teaching, Research and Service

As educators, they powerfully inspire student ambition; as researchers, they drive scholarship to new heights; and as citizens, they reach out to the community to expand resources to the underserved. Six UC San Diego faculty members will be honored at the 40th annual Chancellor’s Associates Faculty Excellence Awards for going above and beyond to make a positive impact in their teaching, research and service. The recognition ceremony will be held Thursday, March 20 at 5:30 p.m. at the J.R. Beyster Auditorium at the Rady School of Management.

Driving Change: Transportation Services Strives to Make Progress on Budget and Improve Services
