University of California President Janet Napolitano, Gov. Jerry Brown, legislators, business leaders and UC’s top climate and energy experts will gather at UC San Diego for the UC Summit on Carbon and Climate Neutrality Oct. 26-27. The summit will explore UC’s groundbreaking research on climate change and deliver 10 scalable solutions for slowing climate change that can be applied to California, the nation and the world.

Home to nearly half of the nation’s plug-in electric vehicles, California has emerged as a leader in embracing clean car technology and infrastructure. Now, thanks to research funding from the California Energy Commission, the next generation of electric vehicle charging stations has been commissioned at the University of California, San Diego and are being used to test a new form of data communication between electric vehicles, charging stations and the power grid.

UC San Diego has received a SANDAG Diamond Award in recognition of the university’s efforts to encourage their employees to use alternative transportation. Currently, 58 percent of campus commuters use alternative transportation options including: Public transit, carpool, vanpool, Coaster Club, Pedal Club, carsharing, Zimride ride-matching access, campus shuttles and more.

When The Preuss School UCSD Class of 2015 graduates this week, senior Diego Espinoza will have a lot to celebrate. Not only is Espinoza the class valedictorian, he is also going to Tufts University on a full-ride scholarship. His classmate and salutatorian Belen Hernandez will be celebrating as well—she is one of 21 Preuss students who will attend UC San Diego on a full ride through the Chancellor’s Associates Scholars Program.

The Preuss School UCSD—a charter middle and high school for low-income students who strive to become the first in their families to graduate from college—has been ranked the best high school in San Diego County by U.S. News & World Report, which recently released its annual list of “Best High Schools.” Located on the campus of the University of California, San Diego, the school is also ranked the 5th best high school in California, the 9th best charter school in the country and 39th overall in the nation.

For Chris Johnson and his fellow groundskeepers Andre Leon and Michael Scarry, growing their own trees and planting them on campus seemed like one of the most sustainable things they could do. It was this belief that led them to start making their own compost and growing their own plants in their spare time two years ago. Now, their efforts have earned them the first-ever grant from the Staff Sustainability Network, one of the campus’s newest staff associations and the only organization of its kind within the University of California system.

James Noraky knows exactly what ignited his interest in pursuing a career in research: It was his experience at The Preuss School UCSD, a charter middle and high school for low-income students who strive to become the first in their families to graduate from college. During his time at Preuss, Noraky recalls undertaking a variety of science fair projects, a requirement at the school. His projects were often creative and ambitious – once, he experimented with using sound waves as a means of refrigeration. Another time he developed control circuitry that allowed muscles in the forearms to control prosthetic hands.
