Alumnus Taner Halicioglu Kicks off Campaign for UC San Diego with $75 Million Gift

A $75 million gift from Facebook pioneer Taner Halicioglu will establish the Halicioglu Institute for Data Science at UC San Diego. The computer science alumnus hopes that the new institute will promote a cross-disciplinary field that is considered the backbone of many other disciplines.

UC San Diego Earns 12 CASE Awards

The Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) has awarded UC San Diego top honors for outstanding work in alumni relations, design and photography, digital communications, magazines, marketing and video. The university garnered 12 awards—including five gold awards—in the annual CASE District VII Awards of Excellence, which recognizes best practices at educational institutions in the western United States.

Safety First: Community Service Officers Expand Role on Campus

With just one bicycle enforcement officer on the UC San Diego Police Department, gathering up the abandoned bikes can present a challenge. This summer, however, the department tried something different. At the suggestion of Sergeant Manuel “Nel” Garcia, who oversees the department’s Community Service Officer Program, CSOs began assisting with bike abatement. The team of student officers fanned out across campus dutifully tagging bikes with warnings, then helping to remove abandoned bikes.
