A $75 million gift from Facebook pioneer Taner Halicioglu will establish the Halicioglu Institute for Data Science at UC San Diego. The computer science alumnus hopes that the new institute will promote a cross-disciplinary field that is considered the backbone of many other disciplines.

The Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) has awarded UC San Diego top honors for outstanding work in alumni relations, design and photography, digital communications, magazines, marketing and video. The university garnered 12 awards—including five gold awards—in the annual CASE District VII Awards of Excellence, which recognizes best practices at educational institutions in the western United States.

Selena Lopez was recently recognized for her efforts to give back to the San Diego community while promoting health, the environment and social justice. The Sustainability Office student ambassador has been selected to participate in the Principal Community Scholar Program, a prestigious opportunity to lead a campus community service project and receive a $1,000 scholarship.

When the Mesa Child Development Center (MCDC) opened its doors more than seven years ago on UC San Diego’s east campus, the goal was to offer flexible part-time child care that would help meet the unique needs of international families. Now, with newly expanded facilities, MCDC is able to offer new full-time programs that will build upon the vibrant and diverse community already flourishing at the center.

With just one bicycle enforcement officer on the UC San Diego Police Department, gathering up the abandoned bikes can present a challenge. This summer, however, the department tried something different. At the suggestion of Sergeant Manuel “Nel” Garcia, who oversees the department’s Community Service Officer Program, CSOs began assisting with bike abatement. The team of student officers fanned out across campus dutifully tagging bikes with warnings, then helping to remove abandoned bikes.

UC San Diego Fleet Services is replacing the motor oil in its vehicles with a greener alternative – bio-based motor oil made from plants. The new green transportation demonstration project is part of a larger commitment to advance sustainable principles throughout campus.
