The Design Lab at the University of California San Diego, under the direction of founder Don Norman, has received a $250,000 gift from global communications company, Viasat Inc. (NASDAQ: VSAT). The investment will support efforts at the Design Lab’s Center for Design-Driven Transformation (CDDT) to assist companies in using leading-edge design tools and perspectives to stay competitive in an ever-changing business landscape. Viasat was founded by Mark Dankberg and two UC San Diego alumni, Steve Hart and Mark Miller.

The Dr. Herbert and Nicole Wertheim Family Foundation has pledged $25 million to the University of California San Diego as a lead gift to usher in a new era of public health research, education and advances that will promote healthier populations on a local, national and global scale because of the university’s increased focus on public health.

Aira is pleased to announce that the University of California San Diego is the first Aira-enabled university in the United States. Aira, a San Diego-based startup, leverages wearable technology, artificial intelligence and live, human agents to deliver real-time visual description for people who are blind or have low vision. UC San Diego is the first university to join the Aira Campus Network, offering free access to the pioneering accessibility technology to vision impaired members of its entire campus community including students, staff and faculty.

The University of California San Diego and Spin, the dockless personal mobility company, are announcing the results of a bikeshare partnership pilot program which was created to provide more than 36,000 students, faculty and staff with an affordable, equitable and eco-friendly way to get around campus. The pilot, which launched in December 2017, is part of a university-wide initiative to become carbon-neutral by 2025.

In 2012, the popular UC San Diego Craft Center abruptly closed. Students, staff and faculty, who enjoyed a variety of non-credit classes and programs including ceramics and glass blowing to photography and weaving, were shocked and saddened. But the uproar from neighbors, who for decades also enjoyed the center that connected the campus and community, was surprising.

Coursera for UC San Diego is offering students, staff and faculty free access to over 50 Coursera online courses and specializations along with the ability to obtain free certificates upon completion—a savings of up to hundreds of dollars for participants. The Coursera specializations, all taught by UC San Diego faculty, are a series of related courses designed to help students master a specific topic. Some specializations may require as few as four courses and only take a few months to finish. Those completing the course receive a certificate in that particular skill from Coursera, branded by UC San Diego.
