Technology, processes and online learning in general have significantly changed since UC San Diego launched the Office for Online and Technology Enhanced Education in 2015. That office has since transitioned into Digital Learning under the Teaching + Learning Commons, and we recently had an opportunity to talk with Director Karen Flammer to learn more.

Located on UC San Diego’s La Jolla campus, the 156,000-square-foot building represents the most recent addition to the university’s world-class medical campus. Opened to patients in March 2018, the new facility offers the best clinical care and translational medicine in one location, with an array of integrated outpatient services that include multi-specialty clinics for breast, urology, sports medicine and spine care. There are eight surgery suites, basic and advanced imaging, physical therapy and pain management plus infusion and apheresis services.

The late Richard N. (“Dick”) Krupp, born in 1930 to a family of Russian Jewish ancestry and very modest means, suffered from severe asthma as a child. His doctors offered little hope of full recovery. By the time he was a young man, Krupp realized that he had no alternative but to heal himself and began reading the works of popular health and nutrition authors of that period. As a result of his research, he turned to healing approaches such as proper diet and nutrition as well as natural therapeutics including herbs, vitamins and minerals. Krupp’s health improved dramatically.

The year was 1960. John F. Kennedy was elected president, “To Kill a Mockingbird” was published and the U.S. launched satellite Transit-1B into space, ushering in a new era in navigation technology. One other pivotal event happened that year—the University of California San Diego was officially established on Nov. 18 as the seventh campus in the UC system.

“UC San Diego is a community of changemakers and innovators,” said UC San Diego Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla Sept. 28 as he welcomed a crowd in Atkinson Hall at the IBM-UC San Diego signing ceremony celebration. “It is not an exaggeration to say that at this campus, which in its short time of 57 years is the top ten in the country and top 15 in the world, we must have done something right.

How can humans best cooperate in an increasingly complex world? The Center for Peace and Security Studies (cPASS) at the University of California San Diego is working to find out by studying new and emerging modes of conflict – cybersecurity, military automation, weapons of mass destruction, cross-domain deterrence, and intelligence derived from big data. Launched in 2016 by social scientist and foreign policy expert Erik Gartzke, the center has now received a $3.32 million multiyear grant from the Charles Koch Foundation to support its mission and growth.
