Mesmerized by the movement of water as a child—from the ocean to waves and floods—Timu Gallien has transformed her childhood curiosities into full-time research as one of UC San Diego’s newest Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Fellows at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Serving as a role model for women in STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), Gallien studies coastal flood risks, sea level rises and the effects of urbanization in order to create awareness about the potential consequences of climate change.

Collectively contributing more than 16.8 million hours to UC San Diego, nearly 500 staff members were recognized for their outstanding service and dedication at the 46th Annual Service Awards held Oct. 14 in the Price Center West ballroom. Acknowledgement and awards were given to those who had reached 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40-year milestones in their careers.

The San Diego chapter of ARCS Foundation, Inc. awarded 31 UC San Diego graduate students with fellowship awards totaling $222,500 for the 2013-14 academic year. A national non-profit organization led entirely by women, the foundation seeks to support the growth of scholarship in science, engineering and medical research.

At just 15 years of age, Eric Chen began working in a UC San Diego biology laboratory on a more effective way of developing drugs to treat the flu virus. Now, his name and his study have gone viral. Chen, a senior at Canyon Crest Academy, has been awarded the grand prize in the Google Science Fair.

Although one of the smallest academic demographics on campus with just 1,250 individuals, postdoctoral scholars at the University of California, San Diego are instrumental in driving the university’s groundbreaking research and innovative discoveries. These scholars skillfully manage immense research projects, work to secure grants to support the continuation of their work, present their findings at conferences and mentor budding students. Highly ambitious with a desire to make an impact in their field, post-docs are unstoppable forces.

Khosla on Ridge Walk Monday to exchange a smile, pose for a photo and receive a chocolate chip cookie as a personal gesture of hospitality during Welcome Week. As he handed out the cookies, Khosla lightheartedly reminded students to “Try to eat lunch before you eat that!”

An annual tradition to honor the commitment and contributions of UC San Diego staff members, this year’s All Staff Picnic was a hit with more than 3,000 people in attendance. Held Aug. 16 in Town Square, staff members were treated to a tasty lunch by Bar None BBQ and entertained by the Full Strength Funk Band.

Waters Corporation announced today their sponsorship of a new, two-year, postdoctoral Clinical Chemistry Fellowship at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine. Fellows will be trained in classical clinical chemistry, laboratory administration and research practices to prepare them for directorship positions at medical schools or hospital-based clinical chemistry laboratories.
