By the time Bruce Gorder was diagnosed with melanoma, it was too late. At just 37, his life was taken by the deadly disease, leaving his wife, young daughter and family devastated. Yet out of the tragedy a new initiative was borne—one that could potentially save lives.

An annual tradition to honor the commitment and contributions of UC San Diego staff members, this year’s All Staff Picnic was a hit with more than 3,000 people in attendance. Held Aug. 16 in Town Square, staff members were treated to a tasty lunch by Bar None BBQ and entertained by the Full Strength Funk Band.

Waters Corporation announced today their sponsorship of a new, two-year, postdoctoral Clinical Chemistry Fellowship at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine. Fellows will be trained in classical clinical chemistry, laboratory administration and research practices to prepare them for directorship positions at medical schools or hospital-based clinical chemistry laboratories.

“It was scary. It was emotionally draining. It took everything out of me more days than not,” said Jacob Robinson. Being in a wheelchair, Robinson had some fears about circumnavigating the Atlantic Ocean, but last summer he seized the opportunity to explore the world through the Semester at Sea Program. “In the end, it was a life-changing experience that I will never forget,” he said.
