As the first in her family to attend a four-year university, Sierra Turner learned that it takes heart and commitment to achieve success. Upon graduating from UC San Diego in 2009, she worked for two years with underserved students at an elementary school in Vista. Burdened by the reality that she had educational opportunities that many of her students lacked, she decided to join Teach for America—a national nonprofit whose mission is to improve educational equity. Turner is one of 37 UC San Diego alumni who have been selected this year to teach in some of the nation’s most underserved schools.

An underserved school located in Imperial Beach, the majority of Bayside students come from low-income families and many qualify for free or reduced lunch. It is Chris Fry’s job, as senior vice president of engineering at Twitter, to make sure his flock of engineers continues to fly in formation. Yet it is his ability to build and manage innovative teams that makes him one of the most valuable technology leaders in the business today. Fry credits his versatility to the interdisciplinary education he gained while pursuing a Ph.D. in cognitive science at UC San Diego — a path that while maybe not an obvious choice for his field, has proven invaluable.

In turn, by facilitating digital media projects that draw upon the traditions, language and history of the youth, undergraduates discover the broad diversity and cultural breadth that exists in local San Diego communities.
