UC San Diego and Marine Corps Celebrate 50th Anniversary of Camp Matthews Land Transfer

More than one million marines underwent training at Camp Matthews, part of a large military base that existed from 1917 to 1964 on the site where the University of California, San Diego now resides. More than a dozen marksmanship training facilities, including rifle, pistol and skeet ranges, served new recruits until the base was decommissioned and transferred to the university in 1964—the same year the campus’s first undergraduate students arrived.

Gorder Walk 5K to Promote Melanoma Awareness on October 11

It was out of tragedy that Charles Gorder was inspired to start a movement to illuminate and help counter the pervasive and dangerous role of melanoma. In 1993, he launched the Bruce Gorder 5K UC San Diego Walk for Melanoma in honor of his late son who lost a seven-year battle with the deadly skin cancer at age 37. Today, it is still the only 5K dedicated to raising funds for melanoma research in San Diego. The event has grown exponentially over the past two decades, garnering over $1.3 million to support melanoma research, treatment and education at UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center. This year the 21st Annual Gorder Walk will take place on Oct. 11.

Seven New Trustees Join the UC San Diego Foundation Board

Proactive stewards, higher education advocates and expert financial strategists, UC San Diego Foundation trustees play an important role in cultivating community partnerships and garnering resources to support UC San Diego research, teaching and public service initiatives. Trustees govern the Foundation, including managing net assets totaling $715 million, including an endowment of approximately $513 million, and help advance the university’s fundraising efforts. Seven trustees join the 2014-15 Foundation board this year, three new and four returning, including regional business executives, philanthropists, law professionals and alumni.

240 Undergraduates to Present at UC San Diego Summer Research Conference August 14

Undergraduate students conducting faculty-mentored research at a San Diego County institution of higher learning will have the opportunity to present their findings this summer to peers, professors and the general public at the annual Summer Research Conference held at the University of California, San Diego on August 14. This year’s event will feature more than 240 students from colleges around the region, as well as eight University of California campuses, two dozen universities across the U.S. and several visiting international students.

Golf Tournament Supports Cancer Research in Honor of Brian Schultz Aug 2

Golfers will gather on the green to honor their friend and fellow avid golfer Brian Schultz, who lost a sudden and brief battle with cancer at the age of 27. The 19th annual Brian Schultz Memorial Golf Classic will be held on Saturday, August 2 at the Rancho Bernardo Inn and will feature a golf tournament, an awards banquet, family-friendly activities, live entertainment and more. Proceeds benefit research at University of California, San Diego Moores Cancer Center.

Preuss School Teacher Shannon Baird Awarded Frontiers in Physiology Fellowship

Shannon Baird, a science teacher at The Preuss School UCSD, has been chosen as one of 14 educators from across the nation to receive a Frontiers in Science Research Teaching Fellowship from the American Physiology Society. The year-long program includes an opportunity to collaborate with local scientists in a laboratory over the summer as well as participate in an online professional development program that provides insight into how to engage students through hands-on science projects.

Seniors from Across Campus Reunite, Reminisce at All Campus Graduation Celebration

Nearly a thousand graduating seniors from all six colleges gathered on RIMAC Field Friday night for the 7th Annual All Campus Graduation Celebration. The event offered students a time to relax, reunite and reminisce with friends and family while being treated to appetizers from local food vendors and a concert by San Diego rock band Pinback.

Record Number of UC San Diego Students to Serve as Teach For America Educators

As the first in her family to attend a four-year university, Sierra Turner learned that it takes heart and commitment to achieve success. Upon graduating from UC San Diego in 2009, she worked for two years with underserved students at an elementary school in Vista. Burdened by the reality that she had educational opportunities that many of her students lacked, she decided to join Teach for America—a national nonprofit whose mission is to improve educational equity. Turner is one of 37 UC San Diego alumni who have been selected this year to teach in some of the nation’s most underserved schools.

Staff Members Recognized for Exemplary Service to Campus and Community at Annual Employee Awards

When Cesar Figueroa, assistant resident dean at Warren College, learned that students at Bayside Elementary lacked basic classroom supplies, he decided to take action. An underserved school located in Imperial Beach, the majority of Bayside students come from low-income families and many qualify for free or reduced lunch. Determined to make their lives better, Figueroa has recruited UC San Diego students and staff to join in revitalization efforts as volunteers and mentors and has cultivated community partnerships to garner resources for the school.
