Preuss School Teacher Anne Artz Awarded Einstein Fellowship

Anne Artz, a teacher at The Preuss School UCSD, has been selected as one of only 27 K-12 educators nationwide to be a Congressional Fellow for the 2013-2014 Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator Fellowship Program, where she will serve for an academic year as a representative and promoter for STEM education (science, technology, engineering and math). The program is coordinated by the Triangle Coalition for Science and Technology Education, a non-profit organization based in Washington, D.C. that advocates and supports STEM programming in schools.

Muir Musical Ensemble Presents “Sweeney Todd” April 11-13 at UC San Diego

The University of California, San Diego’s annual Muir Musical returns this year with a production of “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.” This chilling tale of a man wrongly accused and seeking revenge through the guise of a barber shop will bring together students from all six colleges for a full-scale Broadway show by the Muir Musical Ensemble.

The Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) has awarded UC San Diego top honors for outstanding alumni engagement, donor outreach and philanthropy initiatives. The collaborative efforts of UC San Diego’s Alumni and Constituent Engagement, Advancement and Central Programs, Foundation and Advancement Services, Student Affairs, Student Foundation, and University Communications and Public Affairs resulted in 13 honors—including four gold awards—in the prestigious 2013 CASE District VII Awards of Excellence, recognizing best practices at educational institutions in the western United States.

She is currently the African American Campaign Coordinator for the Network for a Healthy California at UC San Diego, where she dedicates her time to helping to reform children’s eating habits and providing nutritional resources for low-income families.

Engineering a Future

Equipped with circuit wires, small motors, batteries and cardboard boxes, more than 150 high school girls constructed, decorated and launched miniature robots during a workshop designed show them the fun side of engineering. Hosted by the UC San Diego Society for Women Engineers (SWE), the Jan. 26 Envision event presented a chance for young women—especially those from underrepresented schools—to experience the multitude of pathways available in the field of engineering.

These small vibrant patches provide space for students to cultivate organic vegetables, fruits, herbs and other plants that support healthy, natural diets—an initiative that echoes campus programs that provide eco-friendly vegan and vegetarian options for students, faculty and staff at all dining locations.
