She calls herself an “everyday mom,” but her cause goes far beyond her own children: Lakeysha Sowunmi has made it her mission to promote healthy lifestyle changes for all San Diego families. She is currently the African American Campaign Coordinator for the Network for a Healthy California at UC San Diego, where she dedicates her time to helping to reform children’s eating habits and providing nutritional resources for low-income families.

Equipped with circuit wires, small motors, batteries and cardboard boxes, more than 150 high school girls constructed, decorated and launched miniature robots during a workshop designed show them the fun side of engineering. Hosted by the UC San Diego Society for Women Engineers (SWE), the Jan. 26 Envision event presented a chance for young women—especially those from underrepresented schools—to experience the multitude of pathways available in the field of engineering.

Whether tucked away among the eucalyptus groves, or secretly ensconced within student housing, UC San Diego is now home to numerous gardens across campus that promote the education and growth of sustainable food and local produce. These small vibrant patches provide space for students to cultivate organic vegetables, fruits, herbs and other plants that support healthy, natural diets—an initiative that echoes campus programs that provide eco-friendly vegan and vegetarian options for students, faculty and staff at all dining locations.

Angela Fang, a freshman at the University of California, San Diego, envisions her future as a Supreme Court Justice, making landmark decisions that will benefit society. “I’d like to become someone who leaves an impact that will last beyond my lifetime,” said Fang.

Five UC San Diego students who are former foster youth were recently chosen to receive state-of-the-art Sony Electronics products. Two junior faculty members were also awarded digital tools to enhance their innovative teaching and research projects. This is the fourth year that Sony has partnered with UC San Diego and other campuses nationwide to provide scholars with equipment that will allow them to succeed in a technology-driven learning environment.
