Hector Enriquez first visited UC San Diego when he was 12 years old as part of a summer program. During his free time, he would explore the campus and envision himself as a student. A year later, he learned that if he succeeded in his classes and was admitted to UC San Diego, he could be awarded a Chancellor’s Associates Scholarship, which would cover his full tuition and housing costs. This fall, his dream came true. Enriquez is the first in his family to attend college, and he is already inspiring his siblings to follow in the same path.

UC San Diego Named a Top University for Serving Black Students

The University of California San Diego is one of three universities to earn the highest-ranking score in a new report card that measures how well public universities across the nation are serving black students. The inaugural survey, conducted by the University of Southern California Center on Race and Equity, graded institutions on four criteria—representation equity, gender equity, completion equity and black students-to-black faculty ratio.

Black Academic Scholarships Provide Access to UC San Diego

UC San Diego and the Black Alumni Council are partnering to strengthen support of Black students. In total, $135,000 will be awarded to 54 students through the UC San Diego Black Alumni Scholarship award this fall, including 19 incoming freshmen and 35 current students whose awards will be renewed.

Washington Monthly Names UC San Diego the Best Public University for Social Mobility

The University of California San Diego has been named the #1 public university in the nation by Washington Monthly for contributions to social mobility, research and public service. UC San Diego has topped the rankings eight times over the past nine years.

25th Annual Luau and Legends of Surfing Invitational Set for Aug. 19

Now in its 25th year, the annual Luau and Legends of Surf Invitational unites more than 500 surfers, scientists and cancer survivors who share two great passions: surfing and finding a cure for cancer. All proceeds from the public event, which has raised over $8 million since it was launched in 1993, go to support research, teaching and clinical programs at Moores Cancer Center—the only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in our region, and one of only 49 in the U.S.

For more than 20 years, Lucero Felicita Camarena felt a dissonance inside, assigned a gender that was incompatible with her internal sense of womanhood. In her experience as a Mexican-American raised by a single mother in Turlock, Calif., Camarena was never exposed to representations of transgender identity. By sharing her story as UC San Diego’s All Campus Commencement student speaker, she hopes to inspire courage in others to channel their truth as a powerful form of social change.

Inspiring Greatness in Others

Margaret Rattanachane’s energy abounds, powered by a love for people and creating community. Adored by her colleagues, who affectionately call her “Mimie,” she is known as the heart and pulse of UC San Diego’s Department of Education Studies. As a program and faculty assistant, she serves as an ambassador and relationship builder, increasing awareness of the ways in which faculty and students are transforming educational access.

Scholars Find Family at UC San Diego

On Monday, Chancellor Khosla welcomed the new freshman cohort at a special event held at the Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation. The program includes admitted freshmen from Gompers Preparatory Academy, Lincoln High School and The Preuss School UCSD as well as students from community-based organizations and federally recognized Native American tribes.
