The University of California San Diego Library has embarked on new international agreements with two academic libraries— Fudan University Library in Shanghai, China and the Göttingen State and University Library in Germany.

UC San Diego Health will open Jacobs Medical Center, a 245-bed medical and surgical specialty hospital, on November 20, 2016. Named in recognition of $100 million in gifts from Joan and Irwin Jacobs, the 10-story facility combines renowned physician-scientists and care teams, precision medicine, clinical trials and creative arts and culinary offerings to provide an extraordinary healing experience for patients and families.

Ruth Williams, a mathematician who analyzes math models associated with real-life problems, came to UC San Diego in 1983, attracted to the La Jolla campus by the strong science, engineering and mathematics faculty that she believed she could collaborate with to develop new theories and models in her field.

President-elect Donald Trump’s proposed plan to build a wall along the United States-Mexico border may be unnecessary, finds new research from the University of California San Diego. The great migration surge of Mexico-born workers crossing into the U.S. is over—and will remain this way for years to come. Instead, the new migration hot spot will be workers moving from Northern Africa into Europe.

A new program at UC San Diego called Hacking for Defense gives students opportunities to leverage the culture of rapid innovation to address national security challenges. UC San Diego students worked in teams on real-world problems identified by the U.S. Navy: humanitarian assistance involving robots and defense against underwater vehicle swarms.

Karthik Muralidharan joined UC San Diego’s Department of Economics in 2008, after earning his Ph.D. at Harvard University. An affiliate of several prominent research organizations, he recently accepted an invitation to serve as an honorary advisor to the National Institution for Transforming India, an initiative of the Indian federal government. He will be working with the secretaries of education in the Indian states.
