October 11, 2018 — These four remarkable individuals all have two things in common: they played significant roles in making UC San Diego the top-ranked university it is today and they will be honored as recipients of the 2018 Revelle Medal. This year’s Revelle Medalists are Marye Anne Fox; John B. West, M.D.; Robert Conn; and Sanford (Sandy) Lakoff.

October 11, 2018 — For those on the autism spectrum, getting hired for a job can be a daunting step, especially the interview process. Often, social anxiety and a preference for routine make it difficult for autistic people to communicate their skills and make big life transitions. UC San Diego neuroscientist Leanne Chukoskie recognized an opportunity to help local autistic young adults—an underrepresented population in the STEM field—build their social skills and professional resume.

October 10, 2018 — Early adoption of tobacco control efforts in California led to fewer people ever smoking, reduced the amount used by those who do smoke and helped smokers quit at a younger age — when their risk of developing lung cancer is lowest. As a result, lung cancer deaths are 28 percent lower in California compared to the rest of the country and the gap is widening each year by almost a percentage point.

October 8, 2018 — Working on laser-guided flying vehicles. Developing a deeper analysis of cancer cells. Deploying data-science algorithms to save endangered mangroves. The Halıcıoğlu Data Science Institute at UC San Diego has launched a new program to fund 27 data-driven research projects for 34 UC San Diego undergraduates. The inaugural class of fellows from the Halıcıoğlu Institute features undergraduates from some 15 different academic disciplines – from computer science to philosophy. That impressive diversity in major study areas highlights the breadth of subject areas that can benefit from data science applications, noted program leaders. Other projects include: bettering baseball by predicting pitcher injuries; accelerating cellphone service by using artificial intelligence; and saving lives by using the realism of augmented reality to search through earthquake rubble.

October 8, 2018 — On Monday, October 15, UC San Diego Health will open a new comprehensive health center located at 16950 Via Tazon in Rancho Bernardo. Described as a “clinic of the future,” the new 57,000 square foot facility will offer patients increased access to a team of top doctors and nurses, and an array of convenient services, such as urgent care and advanced imaging, including a pharmacy and optical boutique.

October 5, 2018 — Researchers at University of California San Diego School of Medicine, with collaborators across the country, report that people who participate in dementia prevention trials are primarily motivated by altruism and pleased to help.

October 5, 2018 — This fall, the Holocaust Living History Workshop once again launches its year-long series of educational events composed of eight seminars, a documentary film screening and a photography exhibition underscoring this year’s theme, “History, Memory & Meaning of the Holocaust.” The workshops are presented by the UC San Diego Library and the UC San Diego Jewish Studies Program.

October 4, 2018 — Engineers at UC San Diego used wearable off-the-shelf technology and machine learning to predict an individual’s blood pressure and provide personalized recommendations to lower it based on this data.

October 4, 2018 — Starting in the fall of 2018, UC San Diego Health will be the first health system in San Diego County to implement a policy ensuring that all mandatory reporters are responsible for reporting cases of suspected human trafficking. This policy will be a coordinated effort of administrative and professional staff at all points of entry into the health system.

October 4, 2018 — A seismographic network based at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego will continue to provide vital real-time data about earthquakes and other seismic events over the next five years thanks to a $16.7 million grant from the National Science Foundation.
