Prospective undergraduate students can now voluntarily self-identify their sexual orientation, sex assigned at birth and gender identity on the UC application. Current students are also invited to regularly update this information on UC San Diego’s TritonLink portal. The measure grew out of recommendations from the UC Task Force and Implementation Team on LGBT Climate and Inclusion, formed by UC President Janet Napolitano.

Redefining the standard of specialized inpatient care in San Diego, the long-awaited Jacobs Medical Center opened its doors to patients last week after nearly a decade of planning and construction. By the end of opening day, more than 100 patients—from neonates in incubators to adults battling cancer—had been safely transferred to the new hospital’s specialty care units.

On November 4, 2016, surgeons at UC San Diego Health performed the region’s first combined heart-liver transplant (CHLT). During the 10-hour surgery, 54-year old Frank “Sonny” Taitano received a healthy heart and liver. This is the first successful heart-liver transplant for San Diego; less than 10 of these surgeries are performed each year in the U.S.

The University of California San Diego will honor World AIDS Day on Thursday, Dec. 1 to raise awareness of the impact that HIV/AIDS has had and continues to have on the San Diego community, the nation and world. In recognition of the international event day, which was established in 1988, the campus will sponsor a number of free activities open to the public including a display of three sections of the AIDS Memorial Quilt, a presentation on the HIV prevention pill, talks for specific communities and populations impacted by HIV, artistic performances and more.

Researchers at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego and colleagues analyzed Arctic Ocean satellite data from a 19-year period and found that the amount of biomass production at the base of the food web has increased 47 percent since 1997.
